With all the hoopla surrounding the new Star Trek, it’s no surprise that we’ve seen quite a few Trek-related video releases over the last few weeks, like the Blu-Ray original series reviewed in this space last week. But what has made me the happiest is a new DVD version of Galaxy Quest, the sci-fi comedy that turns 10 this year. I feel that Galaxy Quest has never really received the wide acclaim it deserves, though it has always been sort of a cult hit. It’s a riff on sci-fi and Trek fandom but one that’s really smart, really funny and never feels pandering. Tim Allen plays a William Shatner-esque ex-star of a Trek-like TV show who spends his days making the convention rounds with his castmates, who all loathe him, when they’re recruited by aliens who have based their civilization on episodes of the TV show they’ve picked up (which they assume are “historical documents”). I know what you’re thinking, but Allen is actually perfectly-cast here. It doesn’t hurt that he’s backed up by an amazing group of actors: Sigourney Weaver as the ship bimbo, Alan Rickman as the depressed former Shakespearean now Kelly Reichardt’s lovely Wendy and Lucy is now out on DVD and I can highly recommend that too. A bare-bones story of a girl (Michelle Williams) looking for her lost dog, it’s a simple and affecting story of rootlessness in contemporary America. Quiet and beautiful. -MARK SLUTSKY |
