The Load-Down

by JAY WATTS III

Returning from one of those periodic hiatuses that strikes bloggers every now and then—whether as a result of dot-com downsizing, lovers’ spats, or, more than likely, alcohol-induced laziness—longtime SF-based blogger Matt Moebius (moebius-rex.livejournal.com) throws up “Brooklyn Anthem,” the barnstorming lead-off song from grime mob Team Shadetek’s new album, with a guest appearance from dancehall producer 77 Klash. For my money, this is the long-awaited sequel to Jay-Z and Notorious BIG’s “Brooklyn’s Finest.”

Refugees from the Warp Records roster who’ve evolved over the past couple of years into producers of dark and uncompromising dancehall, the duo is comprised of Zack Tucker and Matt Schell, who’ve also since escaped Manhattan for Berlin, where they just polished off a full-length in the studios of slice-and-dice hip hop squad Modeselektor (you might recall them from last year’s “Dancing Box” collaboration with TTC). Tucker and Schell also maintain a nice little blog (www.wearechangeagent.com/shadeblog), which gives a small shout-out to MTL, via Ghislain Poirier’s beloved Bounce le gros night (they were here in January).

And if that’s “Brooklyn’s Finest,” part two, soon-to-be-huge British MC Necaras’s “Living in the Ghetto” is the second part of “Hard Knock Life.” Chipmunk vocals, chiming piano and other radio-friendly production styles, with Roots Manuva-like regionalism, can be spotted at www.myspace.com/necstunes. E-mail me some instructions on ripping songs off of these damn MySpace players when you’re done.

Brazil and Baltimore by way of Brixton: Matthew Stone (AKA Matthew Wowow) is another generous producer just looking for a little recognition by offering up fun baile-electro mash-ups of Simian, Michael Jackson, 3.6.Mafia and others at www.myspace.com/matthewwowow.
