Our man in Japan

By Genevieve Paiement

Kevin Ei-Ichi de Forest creates multidisciplinary works of art as "acts of resistance to clichés," most of them relating to the Western world's habit of exoticizing Asian culture. His exhibit, Make Me, is an esthetically stunning mélange of music, sculpture and soundtrack, incorporating everyday Japanese objects. Pointing out Japan's ease in marrying the traditional and contemporary aspects of their culture, Ei-Ichi de Forest also explores his own identity as a Japanese-Canadian man. He created these works, including the standout "Disco tatami," which features two turntables attached to a tatami, when he was artist in residence at Seika University in Kyoto for 18 months. The result is a crystal clear, intimate exploration of Far-East-by-North-Western ideas of culture. At the Maison de la culture Frontenac (2550 Ontario E.) until March 4. Info: 872-7882.
