Nate Munn on life after Unpop and Ghettonuns

SMALL WARS, BIG PLANS: Nate Munn

by RUPERT BOTTENBERG

“Ghettonuns has been put to a lovely death,” says erstwhile Montrealer Nate Munn, founder of the Unpop counter-fest and, until last year, the dude doing the one-man spaz-hop attack called Ghettonuns.

“I might put out some more instrumental video-game punk in the future, but I doubt I’ll ever rap again. It was satire taken to an extreme, and that shit gets tiresome. It was a fucking blast while it lasted, though.

“I had a few Ghettonuns dates booked in Germany and Spain for last October, and I knew it was time to leave Montreal for a while, so my original plan was to head over there and just stay in the EU illegally after the tour. Maybe join the Black Bloc or something. Total idiocy. Thankfully, I said fuck it and took a bus to Victoria to see my moms instead. I got a job and started taking care of my health, which was in a horrendous state. Then I ran into an old friend who needed a bass player.”

The rest is history, specifically that of Munn’s new band, Rocky Mountain Rebel Music—“10 extremely talented chillers from all over the country, and our drummer is a cat from the U.K. It’s like world-reggae-rock-funk madness, with touches of smooth ’50s shit. We put together a national tour and released our debut full DIY, and we’re just getting started, man.”

Also getting started is Small Wars, Munn’s latest solo shit. “I’ve always listened to punk rock ’n’ roll more than anything—Exile-era Stones, Rancid, Social Distortion—but I love Woody Guthrie and Chopin and Aphex Twin too. With Small Wars, the plan is to develop a band that sounds like all this stuff, while somehow remaining listenable. The first EP is called Empty Spaces of the World and it’s super low-fi acoustic and ambient.”

As for the fest he founded, Munn’s just along for the ride now, debuting Small Wars live. “Seb Hell is doing a great job running Unpop, and I’m stoked that it’s become a little institution unto itself. That’s his show now, I’m just passing through to say hi. Someday I’ll move back, for sure. I still consider Montreal home, but I’ve got a few homes—and after 30 years East, I’m down to skip a few winters.”
