Scheduled for launch

by SCOTT C

First things first. For those of you who made their way down to Coda on June 12 for James Pants and Arabian Prince, sorry you got rooked because the club was closed for a few days due to “technical difficulties.” It doesn’t look like it’s going to be rescheduled from here. Also, if you went to Coda last Thursday for Karaoke à la Rap and got turned away, blame a double booking by Coda that didn’t wrap until almost midnight. C’mon guys, surely you can do better than this.

Tonight, Thursday, June 26, Youngstar United, Mind Peace Love and Global NTT present Wanted: The Triple Launch over at Petit Campus, where local heads combine to launch three different projects. Preach Ankobia is proud to present the new video for his song “Be Strong” from his debut LP, Voice of the Streets, while Jonathan Emile will be on hand to launch The Secret Lightspeed Mixtape, which you can pick up at www.mindpeacelove.com. They’ll both be backed by the Kalmunity Vibes Collective’s hip hop ensemble, with Jahsun on drums and Fredy V on bass. Rounding out the night is the Jonesz, another Montreal group that has just signed to Japanese label P-Vine for their upcoming debut LP, Season One, out July 4. You can check out some of the joints they’ve got bubbling at www.myspace.com/thejonesz. I’ll be there holding down the booth, so if you’ve got any requests, send them now.

SEASONED:
Jesse Maxwell of the Jonesz

Don’t forget, Montreal’s Indigone Trio play the Best Buy Stage at the Jazz Fest this Friday. The trio of pianist David Ryshpan, bassist Sebastien Pellerin and drummer Phil Melanson are in the running for the festival’s Grand Prix, and will be performing two one-hour sets at 9 and 11 p.m., so check it out.

Eleveneighty have taken it upon themselves to throw their own Best of Montreal hip hop showcase at Saints Showbar on Saturday, featuring the top three acts as chosen by you in the Mirror’s 2008 Best of Montreal poll. On the bill, Nomadic Massive, Velvet Trench Vibes and Annakin Slayd, with special guest DJ Manifest holding down the turntables. K103’s Don Smooth will also be on hand to navigate the night.

A couple weeks ago, I reviewed the new Payz Play CD and cited Naej as the key producer, but while Naej does contribute to the album, it’s Naes aka Toastdawg that handles the brunt of the production for the four-man crew. Sorry about that, man, it was an honest mistake.

Seven reasons I really can’t forget:
1. Little Brother “Cool As a Fan” (Justus)
2. Shawn Jackson “Go There With You” (CDR)
3. Cody Chesnutt “Afrobama” (CDR)
4. Ayah “Believe” (CDR)
5. Daedelus Love to Make Music To (Ninja)
6. Zaki Ibrahim “Money” King Britt Mix (District Six)
7. Kissey Asplund Plethora (R2)
