There'll be no drinking and fornication at frosh week for the inaugural class at Jerry Falwell's new Liberty University law school. Instead, the class of 61 students are Hell-bent on becoming, in Falwell's words, "as far to the right as Harvard is to the left." Falwell's school philosophy is to train lawyers who will one day work to outlaw abortion, same-sex marriage and other freedoms of choice. "We want to infiltrate the culture with men and women of God who are skilled in the legal profession," Falwell explained. During a sermon in Anchorage, Alaska, Falwell promised to produce "junkyard dog lawyers who... are not afraid of the ACLU." Speaking on behalf of Americans for Separation of Church and State, spokesman Joe Conn said that Falwell's main goal is to steer the government toward his own religious ideals. "When Falwell talks about using the legal system to advance his personal religious beliefs, I get a whiff of the Taliban," Conn said. » Scott Saxon |
