    >> Exart's Espace 418 lets artists take control

    by EVE MACLAUREN

Productions Exart has opened an innovative new gallery in suite number 418 of the Belgo building. From these headquarters Sylviane Poirier represents 12 local artists, whose works can be seen in the gallery until Jan. 9. Poirier says, "I work for the artists as an agent, doing the administrative work to give them more time to work in their studios." Four of these artists--Lise Boisseau, Lorraine Pritchard, Karen Trask, and Alain Vaugier--will have solo exhibitions in the gallery in 2001.

Espace 418 will be available for artists to rent and Maria Torres, head of Exart, is now accepting dossiers for prospective shows. "I see the gallery as offering a space for young or out-of-town artists to exhibit, or for artists who want to have control over their exhibition," Torres explains. The artists will be charged a flat fee for the gallery and no commission on any sales. Another Exart venture for 2001 is the establishment of a Montreal version of the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. Registration will start in February and the exhibition will take place in August at our own Old Port.
