Scottish beat-making collective LuckyMe has been steadily bobbing heads thanks to stellar contributions from cats like recent Warp Records signees Hudson Mohawke and Rustie, as well as outerworldly productions from Mike Slott and Dom Sum. This week, Montreal’s own Turbo Crunk monthly welcomes the foursome to Coda to lay down the law and flip some wigs, so label-head Dom Sum, aka Dom Flannigan, put LuckyMe’s leftfield mass appeal into context. “We existed in beautiful isolation in Scotland for a few years, and then MySpace exploded all over us. In 2006, ’07, me and Hudson Mohawke were invited down to play Plastic People with Benji B and Steve Spacek for the Black Pocket album launch on Exit Records. In the crowd that night were some of the best music makers and DJs from every genre—drum & bass, hip hop, dubstep. I mean, that night we played to our legends and we tore it up. It stands out as a line in the sand for us. A realization that we had begun something. Or at least had something to offer.” With a roster of sounds that range from deep-space, black-hole communications to neck-snapping interplanetary destroyers, LuckyMe has caught the ear of people ready for the next stage of no-boundary beats. “I think it’s important to understand one’s rise and one’s decline equally. Everything is constantly evolving, right? We feel LuckyMe represents the change itself. We don’t want to be known as a hip hop thing, or a beats thing. If we sound different from what’s been before us, then that’s because the music we make is the immediate response to what we have been listening to. We keep changing. “Right now though, our inherent sensibility is right for what people are up for checking out. It’s the right ointment for people right now. Your differences are your greatest assets. The sensibility you have acquired from your guilty pleasures are what make you the illest, most credible artist. You probably just haven’t realized how lucky you are yet.” WITH MEGASOID, MOFOMATRONIX |
