City Life

Best Neighbourhood

1. Plateau
2. NDG
3. Mile-End
4. Westmount
5. St-Henri
6. Verdun
7. Downtown
8. Little Italy
9. St-Leonard
10. Gay Village
11. Pointe St-Charles
12. Côte-des-Neiges
13. Outremont
14. LaSalle
15. Dollard des Ormeaux
16. Centre-Sud
17. McGill Ghetto
18. Rosemont
19. Villeray
20. Park Ex
21. Petit Patrie
22. Old Montreal
23. Ahuntsic
24. Hochelaga-Maisonneuve
25. Little Burgundy

The top five remain the same as last year, although Verdun makes a leap from number eight to number six, and the Village drops to number 10 from six.

Best Minority

1. Anglos
2. Italian
3. Greeks
4. South Africans
5. Jews
6. Portuguese
7. Black
8. Irish
9. Chinese
10. Gays

Honourable mentions: Filipinos • Haitians • Indians • Latinos

Anglos, Italians and Greeks score high again, but we didn’t know there’d been a sudden influx of proud and vocal South Africans, who were nowhere to be found last year. Apparently there was, and they take this shit seriously.

Best Building

1. Place Ville-Marie
2. Sun Life
3. Oratoire St-Joseph
4. Bibliothèque Nationale
5. Concordia EV

6. Big O
7. Bell Centre
8. Notre Dame Basilica
9. Habitat 67
10. St. James United Church

Honourable mentions: Belgo • 1000 de la Gauchetière • Eaton Centre

Habitat crawls out of Honourable mention to join the list of landmarks—maybe something to do with everyone getting all misty-eyed over Expo’s 40th anniversary? And removing the horrid façade revealed the true beauty of St. James United Church, as it too breaks out of Honourable mentions.

Best Place to Spot Celebrities

1. St-Laurent
2. W Hotel
3. Time Café
4. Crescent
5. Buona Notte
6. Old Montrea/Port
7. Globe
8. GoGo Lounge
9. Downtown
10. Ste-Catherine

Honourable mentions: Club Opera • Plateau • The airport • Just for Laughs • St-Denis

Best Place to Have Public Sex

1. Mount Royal
2. Old Montreal/Port
3. Parc Lafontaine
4. Old Port Bridge
5. Canadian Architecture Park
6. Metro
7. Tam-Tams
8. Westmount Park
9. Alleyways
10. Beaver Lake

Honourable mentions: McLennan Library • Ile Ste-Helene • McGill lower field • Notre-Dame Basilica • St. Jospeh’s Oratory

Mount Royal remains the undisputed champ for open-air nookie, and the romance of the Old Port still stirs our loins. When not getting it on outdoors, Montrealers prefer doing it in libraries and churches.
