Bad news?

by SCOTT C

There’s really nothing like bad news to screw up what would have otherwise been a great day. I caught wind of the cancellation of Jamie Lidell’s April 22 show at le National late last week, and it has been confirmed—it’s not gonna happen. But, with the old dark-cloud/sliver-lining rule at work, Mr. Lidell has cancelled to secure a spot at this summer’s Montreal Jazz Festival. According to his people, he’s set for a July 7 date at an undisclosed venue, so keep your eyes peeled for news in the coming months. Lidell stole the soul, and critical acclaim for his sleeper hit LP Multiply on Warp Records, in 2005.

Tonight, Thursday, March 2, DJ Kobal and Andy Williams dig in the crates for their new monthly at Alizé called Karamel. Expect to hear a wide variety of Afrobeat, Latin and tropical funk up in the place, as these guys get the dancefloor moving.

This Friday, March 3, the jazzy grooves of Kobayashi head back to Montreal, after stops in Hamilton and Toronto, for a gig at the Main Hall. They’ll be sharing the stage with the horny horn of sax player Eric Hove and his band Soundclash, as well as Ottawa band

Antizario. Tix are $8 in advance and $10 at the door, with the show starting at 9:30 p.m. Down the street at Petit Campus, you can check out the nu-soul and funky sounds of Kweku and the Movement, Toronto’s God Made Me Funky and the Dust Jackets at 10 p.m. for a mere $7.

Looks like another long-running Montreal weekly is coming to a close, with a sixth-anniversary celebration and big goodbye from Junglist Fridays at Blue Dog. This Friday, March 3, check out

Stabba and all of the stalwart residents of this drum & bass standby as they say farewell to all of the people who have kept this night alive and kicking. Any fool who jumped on the bandwagon to proclaim the sudden death of D&B and junglist culture, in Montreal and beyond, clearly hasn’t been around the dancefloor, the booth or the bass-bins. Make sure you check out this final blowout, and be sure they’ll be running all the big choons that you’ve lost your mind to over and over again. Check out www.mtldnb.com for more info.

Just a reminder to anyone sitting on new Montreal music to get in touch, and I’d like to officially open the door for CDs and mixtapes, which I will now be reviewing in this very space. I know they’re out there, so get ’em in the mail... n
