FROM FRIDAY MAY 25 TO THURSDAY JUNE 1
This film is a “re-imagining” of the popular late-80s series starring a young Johnny Depp. It’s basically just another goofy American high school comedy, with the whole cop thing adding unique plot twists—i.e. car chases and gunfights. Skinny Jonah Hill plays Schmidt, a geek who becomes best buds in police academy with the muscular cool dude Jenko (Channing Tatum). The young-looking pair is chosen to infiltrate a high school and find out who is selling a new kind of drug. Surprisingly funny and entertaining. Bonus treat for the ladies: James’ little brother Dave Franco as a cool high school kid. (RH)

American Reunion
Remember that one joke from the last movie? Passing familiarity with the shenanigans contained in earlier “American Pie” films will be a great advantage in enjoying this latest installment of the saga. While there are scattered laughs to be had in this tale of the original crew (practically every cast member from the original shows up) returning to their old stomping grounds for their 13-year (?!) high school reunion, you probably had the very same laughs 10 years ago. Fanboy supreme Joss Whedon takes the helm of Marvel Comics’ attempt to dominate cinema, and actually makes a good movie out of it. With a quality cast (Downey Jr., ScarJo, Ruffalo, etc), the best special effects mega-millions can buy, and reasonably good dialogue and characterization, it’s the rare superhero flick that satisfies comic-geek fandom without insulting a general audience’s intelligence. If we must be subjected to cartoonish blockbusters, it’s good to know someone is actually interested in doing them right. (MF)

Battleship
“Battleshit”—er, I mean “Battleship”—is a lackluster story about aliens that look like white trash hicks coming to Earth and forcing a battle against a Navy fleet while trying to take over the world. With such an idiotic sci-fi premise wasted on a board game adaptation, special effects made for short attention spans and casting Rihanna as a Navy officer, this movie’s sole success is at being the funniest “Mystery Science Theatre” experience of the year. And it’s only May. (EB)

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Maggie Smith and Judi Dench team up with Tom Wilkinson and Bill Nighy for a golden years retreat to a supposedly luxurious hotel in India. In an effort to save some cash in their old age, the foursome are convinced that outsourcing their retirement will stretch their savings. But the screenplay is rife with cheese. So much cheese that Dench actually takes a job at a call centre teaching Indians how to deal with stuffy Anglo-Saxons. The entire film is awash in stereotypes, and it kills any momentum gained from late-life self-discovery. (CS)

A Disney nature doc on warring chimps in an African jungle, narrated by Tim Allen. The film tells the tale of a young chimp, christened Oscar by Disney, who’s adopted by the alpha male leader of their tribe after his mother is killed. The photography is amazing; it’s directed by Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield, the team who brought us the BBC “Planet Earth” series, which you should see instead of this. The film feels just as scripted and boring as most reality TV; you know a movie has a problem when the making-of teaser that plays during the credits is far more interesting than the film we’ve just seen. Montreal documentary filmmaker Yung Chang’s latest is another fascinating glimpse at a rapidly evolving China. In his follow-up to the amazing “Up the Yangtze,” Chang shows us the lives of two young boxing competitors, eager to prosper through the brutal sport. Through their eyes, and those of their devoted coach, we see how the capitalist ethic has taken over contemporary China. Enthralling and fascinating, this is documentary filmmaking at its best. (MH)

Dark Shadows
Tim Burton’s latest takes us back to his iconic world, but unfortunately doesn’t deliver as one would hope. Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) has been cursed to be a vampire by a witch (Eva Green) and imprisoned for two centuries. Now freed, Depp returns to his family manor to reconnect with his descendants. The recurring witty puns and grainy, gothic feel don’t quite make up for the divided focus and almost nonexistent main storyline. But at least this vampire doesn’t glitter. (EB)

La Délicatesse (Delicacy)
David Foenkinos wrote and directed this story about a young woman (Audrey Tautou) who can’t shake off the sudden death of her husband until three years later, when she begins an unlikely courtship with a Swedish co-worker (François Damiens). Tautou gives a heartbreaking performance as a childless widow whose career occupies her entire being; Damiens is comic and sweet as her unsightly, and seemingly unsuitable, suitor. “La Délicatesse” is a must-see romantic dramedy with its heart in the right place. Though never quite matching the sublime heights of “Borat” or “Bruno,” “The Dictator”—Sacha Baron Cohen’s first fully-scripted film—offers some choice laughs. Cohen plays a composite Middle Eastern dictator, complete with female bodyguards, nuclear ambitions and a proclivity for executing anyone he finds irritating. A trip to the UN leads to our anti-hero getting lost in New York, finding romance and learning that being a dictator isn’t such an admirable thing after all. As totally silly as it sounds, Cohen’s latest film isn’t his best, but is still a cut above the rest. (MH)

The Five-Year Engagement
Violet (Emily Blunt), freshly engaged to Tom (Jason Segel), has aspirations in academia. But when Blunt is offered a prestigious position at the University of Michigan, their wedding plans are all but aborted. As the duo replaces their charmed Bay Area life for the more glum college town reality of Ann Arbor, Segel slips further and further into a grotesque, self-flagellating depression. Producer Judd Apatow, director Nicholas Stoller and Segel last teamed up for the wildly successful “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” but here Segel’s plight, played for sour laughs, feels profoundly pathetic. The Flood
Guy Nattiv’s Israeli drama is a beautiful film, equal parts family melodrama and coming-of-age story. Young Yoni (Yoav Rotman) is busy preparing for his impending bar mitzvah; as a scrawny (but brainy) kid, he is being seriously abused by the school bullies. Soon, his autistic brother Tomer (Michael Moshonov) is sent home after the institution he’s been in for years shuts down. Nattiv manages to tell this story without ever succumbing to the maudlin or cheap sentimentalism. Instead, he lets the two boys’ stories unfold subtly. A smart and moving film. (MH)

This thriller from Norwegian crime writer Jo Nesbø follows the exploits of Roger Brown (Aksel Hennie), a corporate recruiter who moonlights as an art thief. His worlds collide when he meets Clas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau of “Game of Thrones”), a handsome charmer and instant mark for Hennie in both his professional capacities. What starts out as a clever and breezy high-society heist flick eventually turns far more dark, perverse and violent. Around the same point, plausibility is completely thrown out the window, but if you can suspend disbelief and go along with it, it’s an enjoyable thrill ride. (MF)

Based on the successful book series for young adults written by nutter Suzanne Collins, this sci-fi epic stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Evergreen, a 17-year-old girl living in the post-apocalyptic world of Panem. Every year, two residents from each district are chosen to compete in the Hunger Games, during which they must kill each other off until there is one remaining victor. When her sister’s name is called out, Lawrence volunteers to take her place. With lame visual effects and boring dialogue, it’s as underwhelming and banal as the book. (RH)

The Intouchables
This French comedy starts off with a bravura chase scene that misleads the viewer about both the film’s style and its substance. It quickly turns into a heartwarming buddy film about a rich quadriplegic (François Cluzet) who impulsively hires a ne’er-do-well from the projects (Omar Sy) as his private nurse. Antics, bonding and tearjerking moments ensue. It flirts with being terribly tired and clichéd, but Sy’s charm comes through to make it work. (MF)

David Gelb’s documentary is the story of Jiro Ono, an 85 year-old sushi chef considered by many to be the greatest in his field. His sushi-only restaurant, Sukiyabashi Jiro, has a mere 10 seats and a 3-star rating from the Michelin Guide. This is clearly not made for film aficionados as much as for the kinds of yuppie foodies who come out in droves to support any film made about food or wine (or yoga). There is an attempt to imbue the film with some conflict by juxtaposing the talents of Jiro’s two sons, but ultimately the film only works as a tantalizer for select taste buds. (KJ)

Few individuals are more deserving of a biopic than Burmese opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. The sad thing is, maybe French action director Luc Besson wasn’t the right man to helm the project. Michelle Yeoh captivates and is perfectly cast as Suu Kyi in a role that is otherwise hampered by shoddy dialogue. There’s no acceptable reason for such an extraordinary story to fall this flat. (CS)

Xavier Dolan’s third film, following the critically acclaimed “J’ai tué ma mere” and “Les Amours imaginaires,” tells the story of Laurence Alia (Melvil Poupaud), a teacher and writer, who wants to become a woman, but ultimately risks losing the love of his life (a truly heart-wrenching performance by Suzanne Clément) in the process. “Laurence Anyways” has the vigour of an Almodovar movie. At only 24, Dolan has established himself as a young film auteur of great calibre. The writing, acting and directing are superb. (RP)

Kevin Macdonald’s landmark biopic makes it clear that Bob Marley made more than just music. A dazzling array of interviews are carefully patched together, creating a portrait of Marley’s career, but also of the first decades of Jamaica’s life as an independ¬ent nation. At almost two and a half hours, the film offers the most complete picture of Marley that will probably ever be made. Showcasing some of that familiar, yet fantastic, live footage, the film is a fitting, respectful treatment of the man that was and the legend that is Bob Marley. (EM)

Aardman studios are back with what we love them the most for: goofy stop-motion animation, this time in a feature about a crew of oddball pirates on an adventure, with enough sight gags and cleverness to keep this ship rolling along at a rollicking pace. This is easily the best kids’ film out in theatres at the moment; it appeals to all ages, it’s fun¬ny, and the detailed 3D animation is the most impressive Aardman has done to date. (JL)

Director Denis Blaquière leads us through a sobering eco-exposé of Quebec’s horrific garbage dilemma: how astoundingly much of it we produce per capita (even more than the U.S.) and how non-ecologically we sort and get rid of it. It’s not a sleek-looking documentary, but it gets the point across via graphics and fairly interesting interviews. The facts really speak for themselves, so it doesn’t really matter that the visuals are reminiscent of high school educational videos. (CC)

Written and directed by Hiner Saleem, himself a Kurdish expat in France, this dark comedy is about a bromance between a Parisian (Jonathan Zaccaï) and a Kurd (Billey Demirtas) that comes to an abrupt end. Let’s just say a lot of the comedy involves an urn. The trouble really starts when Demirtas’ fiancée (Golshifteh Farahani) and father (Menderes Samancilar) arrive in France. Jane Birkin makes an appearance. It’s heavy-handed, but still charming. Note: a lot of dialogue is in Kurdish without subtitles. (CC)

The Story of Film: An Odyssey
Mark Cousins directs this eight-part documentary about the history and magic of cinema. Created for the BBC, “The Story of Film” is a must-see for anyone who deems themselves a lover of movies. The documentary covers the development of the medium from its origins in the 1920s to today. Be prepared to leave the theatre wanting to immediately brush up on your Ozu, Fellini, Bergman and Godard. It’s a one-of-a-kind adventure into the world of the movies. (RP)

Think Like a Man
A talented cast anchors this infomercial for a Steve Harvey self-help book disguised as a romantic comedy. All of the rich, beautiful characters’ relationship problems are caused by AND solved by this mythical tome, which teaches women to “think like a man” to get what they want. Pretty standard, uninspired stuff all the way through, but this crew is at the very least more appealing than the Ryan Reynoldses and Katherine Heigls of this world. (AR)

To the Arctic 3D
Directed by Greg MacGillvray, with music by Paul McCartney, and narrated by Meryl Streep, this is a breathtaking journey into the lives of mothers and babies living on the North Pole. The story centers on a mama polar bear and her twin cubs as they try to survive in the quickly changing environment of the Arctic. The imagery is striking; don’t be surprised if you feel a tear rolling down your cheek. (RP)

Touch the Sky (Toucher le ciel)
Documentary by Adrian Wills about Cirque de Soleil founder Guy Laliberté’s $50 million trip to the International Space Station. The film looks at the preparations that were necessary for Laliberté before becoming the world’s second space tourist. Much screen time is spent justifying the ostentatious trip as a “poetic social mission,” hoping to draw attention to his One Drop Foundation that provides clean water around the world. It’s barely mentioned that real astronauts are missing out on space travel after decades of training because of underfunded budgets. (CS)

The latest and best to date from local director Kim Nguyen tells the story of an African girl (15-year-old Rachel Mwanza) who gets forcibly drafted into a rebel army, then appointed by its leader as his personal sorcerer. Not surprisingly given the subject, it’s a tough film, but it’s also beautifully shot and edited, poetic and emotionally resonant, with an amazing performance by young Mwanza. Highly recommended. Italian actor/filmmaker Nanni Moretti is sceptical but respectful of the Catholic church with this dramedy set in the Vatican. Immediately following his election, Cardinal Melville (Michel Piccoli) suffers from a panic attack and refuses to bless the masses assembled in St. Peter’s Square. A psychiatrist (Moretti) sworn to secrecy is summoned to diagnose the pope; Moretti’s shrink also happens to be an atheist. It’s a bit long, but also a curious film by an interesting filmmaker. (CS)

What to Expect When You’re Expecting
Based on the bestselling advice book series of the same name, this is a star-studded comedy that tries very hard to be realistic about pregnancy, but ends up being just as cheesy as you’d expect. It follows the intertwining stories of several pregnant couples. While the movie tries to benefit from the few good actors in it (Elizabeth Banks, Anna Kendrick and a certain Chris Rock), it ultimately flops. Make sure your expectations remain low. (RP)
