Montreal’s Parlovr break up and make up. Everything’s relatively hunky dory now, with their tortured follow-up Kook Soul finally ready for public consumption, but the deeply personal second release was the product of a fractured band.

One of the ambassadors of Canada’s defiantly loud is Calgary, Alberta duo Mares of Thrace. Jumping into a studio soon after their inception in 2009, the resulting debut effort, The Moulting, easily paved their way into the burgeoning sludge metal underground.

The story of Lee Fields is a truly inspiring one. Even after 43 years of slinging soul music and gaining little recognition, the man has never stopped slugging. It wasn’t until his mergers with backup band the Expressions and producers Jeff Silverman and Leon Michaels and their Truth & Soul label just a few years ago that he finally captured the world’s ear.
