BLOCK CLOCKER: Too much, too fun

If freedom is choice, hip hop fans are free as the birds this week. However, when choice is limited by a budget of time and/or money, there are difficult decisions to be made. Read on, then mull it over tonight at Bourbon Street West at this month’s West Is Major showcase. David Hodges, Crime in the City, Tyco and many more will get you on the good foot.

Friday’s a no-brainer as Wiz Khalifa and Yelawolf play Théâtre Corona, with your homie Milli Millz opening up. If budget ain’t a factor, hit the afterparty at Time Supper Club, where, in the spirit of youthful rebellion, live tattooing is on display. Watch ’em wince.

Saturday is the tough one. Born to Serve 2010, an international breakdance battle that frankly sounds amazing, gets going at 7 p.m. at l’Olympia. Russia’s Kosto, the United States’ Villin, BxBroox and Nasty Ray, Holland’s Kido, South Korea’s KingSo and France’s Vinz engage in one-on-one beef for the event title, and a mix of local dancers and guests are also in the house for four-on-four battles. Switzerland’s Amjad (Circle Kingz) and Montreal’s Dr. Step (Flow Rock) host. But that ain’t all, friend—Chef Raekwon adds a little Wu to the stew with a live set.

If your brain, body and bank can hack it, the AM Getting Laid after-party the same night at Rialto invites Royce Da 5’9 to bring a little of the “D” to Montreal. Royce laid back pretty deep in the cut at the Slaughterhouse show in April, so it will be good to have him back solo. Peter Jackson, SRH and Omega bring the foreplay. Meanwhile, the Goods at la Sala Rossa cele­brates eight years of soul. Groundfood and my granddaddy Scott C blow out the candles. (Philly sensation Bilal has cancelled at the last minute.)

Lastly, Tuesday, Ninja Tune does summer one more time with a final Sud-West at Terrasse St-Ambroise. Free, funky, and fleeting—so get it while you can. ■
