Animal Kingdom A disaffected teenage boy (James Frecheville) ends up living with his extended family, and falling into the family business of small-time crime, in this Australian thriller. Guy Pearce as a detective is billed high, but the standout performances are from the lesser-known actors playing the family. Writer/director David Michôd keeps the atmosphere tense throughout, throws in a series of 11th-hour twists that step up the intrigue, and portrays his characters with a subtle touch—his thoughtful approach makes this a satisfying standout in the cliché-ridden crime genre. Avatar: Special Edition James Cameroon’s mega-hit is a truly epic creation set on the intricately-designed world of Pandora, where former Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) has his consciousness projected into the avatar of the title, a sort-of genetic cross-breeding of human and alien DNA, the better to communicate with the planet’s big, blue Na’Vi tribespeople—and convince them to hand over their precious resources. The visuals are truly spectacular, but the story is weak, over-long and lacking any really memorable characters and frequently way too corny. New version includes nine extra minutes of footage. Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore Police dog Diggs (James Marsden) and top spy Butch (Nick Nolte) join forces with a cat and a pigeon to defeat an evil hairless cat named Kitty Galore (Bette Midler). The whole thing is some kind of animal homage to James Bond. Basically, this is just another CGI/3D orgy with special effects being thrown at your face. Hollywood is on crack, so wear your 3D glasses all day everywhere you go and enjoy the ride. (RH) Spheretech Sat-Sun 1pm, 2:55pm Côte-des-Neiges 1:10pm

Despicable Me Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) is a crotchety supervillain who’s a bit behind the times. Tech-savvy new villain on the block Vector (Jason Segel) makes it his goal to dethrone the older baddie and embarrass him with his new array of weapons and evil schemes. What’s a Gru to do? Well, shrink and steal the moon, of course! This 3D family comedy isn’t flawless, but when it’s funny it’s bloody hilarious. Still a step down from Pixar, but not a huge one. Dinner for Schmucks Bromantic straight man Paul Rudd is an ambitious executive, and Steve Carrell the half-witted taxman and amateur taxidermist who bumbles his way into Rudd’s life, in this loose remake of French comedy “Le Dîner des cons.” Director Jay Roach keeps the humour at a consistently silly level, so you have to be in that kind of mood, but riotously ridiculous performances from Carrell, Zak Galifanakis and Jemaine Clement (“Flight of the Conchords”) keep the laughs flowing all the way through. Disappearance of Alice Creed, The A lean thriller about a kidnapping that plays almost like a three-hander for the stage. Alice (Gemma Aterton) is a posh British girl snatched away by a pair of businesslike thugs (Eddie Marsan and Martin Compston) and held in a dungeon-like apartment. Not the “torture porn” you might expect, but a decent little potboiler with a few tricks up its sleeve. (MS) AMC Forum 12:05pm, 2:40pm, 5:20pm, 8pm, 10:40pm

Eat Pray Love Based on the book that made millions of women with emotional problems stuff their faces with pizza and meditate, this features Julia Roberts as Elizabeth Gilbert, the divorced writer who travelled for a year. Expendables, The A deliberate throwback to the action flicks of the ‘80s, this directorial effort from Sylvester Stallone co-stars a rogues’ gallery of tough guys: Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Steve Austin. It’s not boring, though not particularly distinguished on any level either; it feels like a mash-up of every straight-to-video action thriller of the last 25 years. Filière 13 After the success of “Les 3 p’tits cochons,” Patrick Huard’s second directorial attempt disappoints. Tough detective guy Thomas (Claude Legault) almost kills a suspect by leaving him in the car. Police spokesman Jean-François (Guillaume Lemay-Thivierge) ruins his career by having a panic attack in front of the media. Their boss Benoît (Claude Doucet) decides to give them a useless assignment to get rid of them. The jokes fall flat and the storyline gets boring quickly. Comedian André Sauvé is the best part as a hilarious psychiatrist. (RH) Beaubien 10am, 5:10pm

I Am Love Tilda Swinton plays a Russian woman married into a Milanese textile dynasty, who finds herself fatally attracted to her son’s business partner, in this melodrama from director Luca Guadagnino. The most notable thing about the film is its rich aesthetic, from the baroque camera movements to the boldly expressionistic editing to the amazing costumes and sets. In the film’s best moments Guadagnino and Swinton are totally masterful, and even in its uneven spots it’s totally original and captivating. (MF) AMC Forum (EST) 1:50pm, 4:45pm, 7:40pm, 10:30pm

I, Don Giovanni Carlos Saura, known mostly for his documentaries and dramas on traditional Spanish dance, turns his gaze to another form with this glimpse at the heyday of 18th-century Venetian poet and librettist Lorenzo da Ponte (Lorenzo Balducci), who finds himself adapting the titular classic opera with a young composer by the name of Mozart (Lino Guanciale). The narrative and visual styles are sometimes a little off, but fans of opera and period pieces in general will most likely be on board with this frilly affair. Inception Christopher Nolan’s-much anticipated new film is a twisty, multi-layered thriller that mostly takes place in its characters’ dreams. Leonardo DiCaprio leads a team (which includes Joseph Gordon Levitt and Ellen Page) of subconscious infiltrators who enter their targets’ minds with the aim of retrieving their deepest secrets. When they get a job to perform an inception--planting an idea instead of stealing one--things get complicated. Nolan is great at managing the film’s multiple narrative overlays (at one point our characters are in dreams, in dreams-within-dreams and in dreams-within-dreams-within-dreams) so that they never get too confusing, and the film is full of ingenious ideas. The action is at times a little flat, shaky and a little too Bourne-damaged, but it’s a great little piece of movie machinery otherwise. Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work Love her or hate her, Joan Rivers is one helluva survivor, in a ruthless business. This doc shows us her highs and lows over a 14-month period. We see her hustle for work, put on a one-woman show and vie for top spot on Celebrity Apprentice (a gig she clearly knows is beneath her, but work is work). A revealing, funny and occasionally poignant film. (MH) AMC Forum 12pm, 2:10pm, 4:20pm, 6:35pm, 9pm

Kids Are All Right, The Julianne Moore and Annette Bening are standouts playing a lesbian couple facing down mid-life crises and two teenaged kids who are growing up too fast. The kids decide to secretly get in touch with the sperm donor who helped to create them. Mark Ruffalo then enters the picture, making life much more complicated for everyone involved. Superb performances and an intelligent script make this movie that rarity: a family melodrama that's never overly sentimental. Avoid spoiler-laden reviews and just go and see it for yourself. Last Exorcism, The “A Necessary Death” director Daniel Stamm teams up with producers Eli Roth and Andrew Gurland for this subjectively-shot verité horror about a lifelong priest (inspired in part by Marjoe Gortner) out to expose the exorcism racket as a fraud before leaving the faith for good. The film is convincing until the last act dumps an unnecessary twist on us, soiling what could have been an important genre offering—if its questions concerning religious fanaticism, child exploitation and female repression had been left to steep on their own. Lebanon Samuel Maoz’s film, set during the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon, takes place inside a tank, where a group of young Israeli soldiers prepares to cross the Lebanese border. The entire film unfolds within the tank, with any action outside of it seen only through its sights. This makes the tension much more immediate, but also makes the film uncomfortable to watch, sometimes harshly so. But in all its difficulty, it’s a brave film, an unflinching look at war and what it does to a soldier’s humanity. Lottery Ticket Produced by Ice Cube and starring former barking rap child Bow Wow, this comedy somehow lacks bite (ayo!). Bow Wow plays a poor kid from the projects who gives his last dollar to bodega owner T-Pain (wouldn’t you?) to buy a lottery ticket. Mesrine: L'Instinct de la mort Vincent Cassel stars as Jacques Mesrine, the real-life bank robber whose exploits thrilled and horrified France in the 1970s, in this first part of a two-part film series based on his life. “Killer Instinct” explores the man’s early life, including a detour to Quebec, where he teamed up with the FLQ and was in and out of various prisons (mostly getting out through wild breakouts). A great character, and a great period to explore, but the film lacks a confident touch and starts to feel like yet another bland international co-production. Nanny McPhee Returns Emma Thompson is back as Nanny McPhee, an ugly version of Mary Poppins. This time, she rescues poor Isabel Green (Maggie Gyllenhaal), whose husband is off to war, leaving her to take care of their children and farm all by herself. Other Guys, The Will Ferrell is the heart and soul of this buddy-cop send-up directed by Ferrell's BFF Adam McKay. The choice of quality comedies this summer has been unusually meager, so while this spoof begs for about 20 minutes of hardcore editing it still walks away with the current “funniest movie of the summer” award based on its quotability. Salt This summer’s haul of action-packed blockbusters is pretty thin, so Angelina Jolie is generating more buzz with this generic spy flick than is warranted. Michael Cera plays Scott Pilgrim, a Toronto musician who falls for the fetching Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and finds he must do battle with her seven evil exes to win her love. Solitary Man A tour-de-force performance from Michael Douglas animates this character drama about a man driven mad by his own mortality, helped by excellent performances from an all-star cast that includes Susan Sarandon, Danny DeVito, Jenna Fischer and Mary Louise Parker. Douglas plays an ex-car-salesman and compulsive philanderer looking to get his life back on track, though he’s constantly diverted by his own demons. On the face of it, he’s a pretty despicable character, but Douglas makes him charming and even sympathetic. He’s full of shit, but weirdly honest about it, and you can see how he’s talked his way through life and feel how hard he’s trying to hold on. (MS) AMC Forum 2:20pm, 4:55pm, 7:30pm, 9:55pm

Cage and Baruchel are an awesome team and both fun to watch. Expect the usual: magic, dragons, good versus evil and so on. If you’re looking to be entertained, you won’t be disappointed. Soul Kitchen In the latest from Fatih Akin (“Head-On,” “The Edge of Heaven”) co-writer Adam Bousdoukos stars as Zinos, the beleaguered owner of the restaurant of the film’s title, situated in a rough but rapidly gentrifying Hamburg neighbourhood. Though as complex and atmospheric as Akin’s other films, it’s distinguished by a comic tone—full of eccentric characters, manic set pieces and the occasional pratfall. Perhaps surprisingly given the serious nature of his earlier films, Akin’s foray into comedy works quite well, largely thanks to a great cast. (MF) Cinéma Parallèle (FST) See Repertory.

Step Up 3D Move over boring blue people with your big boring flowers, 3D just got way hotter. New York City dance crew the Pirates need to win a dance competition to save their secret dance lair. Plot twists ahead! The acting sucks and the story is forgettable, but the dancing in 3D is sick. With hot jams from T-Pain, T.I and Busta Rhymes, you’ll want to stand on your seat and start a dance party. Do it! ¡Viva la Revolución! Switch, The Kassie (Jennifer Aniston) is a single professional in New York who hears the ticking of her biological clock and decides to seek out the perfect sperm donor to concoct her dream child. Wally (Jason Bateman) is her platonic best friend, who drunkenly replaces the sperm sample of Aniston’s too-perfect choice (Patrick Wilson) with his own. When Bateman is called upon to be an uncle figure to his biological son, hilarity doesn’t ensue. The pair actually have decent screen chemistry, but they can’t overcome a bad script. Toy Story 3 The Pixar crew once again prove their cinematic infallibility by producing this near perfect conclusion to the immensely popular trilogy about what happens to children’s toys as they are outgrown. It’s basically a play on old prison escape movies, combined with the same random detours into silliness as the previous flicks. The result is a family film that perfectly balances elements of action, drama and comedy into the first true megahit of the summer. You absolutely can’t miss it. Trois temps après la mort d'Anna When her daughter is murdered, a middle-aged divorcée (Guylaine Tremblay) retreats to the Quebec countryside, where she works through her grief, reconnects with an old love (François Papineau), and loses touch with reality a little. Any resemblance to a Hollywood weepie is strictly coincidental: writer/director Catherine Martin is a severe minimalist, and the extreme stillness of her style makes some moments powerful but others a bit stilted. Depending on your tastes, the film is either grave and austere or boring and depressing. (MF) Beaubien 10:20am, 3pm, 5pm; Sat-Sun 3pm, 5pm

Y'en aura pas de facile Biographer Réjean (Rémy Girard) decides to embellish his own life when he makes a video for a dating website. Various actors play different versions of Girard’s character as he narrates important events that play out as separate sketches. Directed by Marc-André Lavoie (“Bluff”), some of the storylines are funny, while others are forgettable. Emmanuel Bilodeau is great as the man whose winning lottery gets stolen, while stupid-faced comedian Rachid Badouri and Québec “sex symbol” Mahée Paiement are predictably annoying.
