99 Francs In this conceptual roller-coaster ride, Jean Dujardin of “Brice de Nice” plays Octave, a top-level ad writer with a massive ego and a coke habit to match. What ensues is partly his personal descent, partly a searingly critical look at the advertising industry. The film’s fundamental message—that ads are manipulative drivel and the people who make them have sold their souls—is hardly novel or profound, but the strong cast, clever writing, and snappy visual style make it an enjoyable ride. (MF) Beaubien 10:30am, 3:15pm, 7:30pm, 9:30pm Angel François Ozon’s latest is another Technicolor-flavoured throwback à la “8 femmes,” all lush sets, bright colours and extravagant costumes. Romola Garai (“Atonement”) is Angel, a precocious young woman who longs to escape her humble beginnings through the power of her imagination, and becomes a famous novelist. The film really belongs to Garai, who gives a fearless, sometimes grating (but effectively so) performance. Still, the story and the style are both so old-fashioned that you could imagine this being a movie for old ladies with little dogs in their handbags and I wonder if that’s Ozon’s intention, because if he’s trying to subvert anything here, it’s very subtle. Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, The The second in a series of adaptations of C.S. Lewis’s classic, Christian fantasy novels is definitely better than the long and unforgivably boring (considering the source) “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” Now it’s 1300 years later in Narnia, and our four heroes return to save the remnants of Old Narnia, who are being lorded over by the human Telemarines. Also way too long, but with some decent fightin' and less preachin'. (MS) AMC Forum 12:10pm, 3:25pm Cruising Bar 2 Michel Côté reprises his four roles as swinging stud Gérard, self-obsessed yuppie Jean-Jacques, rocker doofus Patrice, and perpetual loser Serge in this sequel to the 1989 comedy. The four find themselves confronting mid-life crises that force them back onto a changed singles landscape, and lowest-common-denominator hilarity ensues. Côté does an admirable job with the multiple roles, disappearing into each with aplomb, but the film’s unrelentingly lowbrow gags are a matter of taste. Worthwhile mainly as a true “only in Quebec” document. Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed Actor and Nixon speechwriter Ben Stein takes on the evolution-vs.-creation debate, Michael Moore style. The defense of creationism is often strange, but just when this film might actually be able to make a coherent argument, Stein goes off into bizarre turf in which he blames Darwin for the Holocaust and then ends with one of Stein's speeches being intercut with Reagan's Berlin “Tear down this wall” speech! A very strange attempt by the religious right to pull their own Michael Moore or Morgan Spurlock. (MH) AMC Forum 1:35pm, 6:50pm Faro, la reine des eaux Zanga (Fili Traore) returns to his rural African village after years spent in the city. Hoping to help the village modernize their water system, and to find out the identity of his father, he runs into walls of superstition, tradition and tribal politics. First-time director Salif Traoré ably weaves together a multi-character narrative that paints a complex and subtle portrait of rural African life, helped with poignant performances from the large cast. An intriguing story with a unique narrative style and dramatic impact. (MF) Ex-Centris (FST) See repertory. Four Minutes In this German drama, a grumpy, elderly single woman (Monica Bleibtreu) teaches piano at a prison. She takes on a new student, Jenny (Hannah Herzsprung), a musical prodigy turned violent criminal. The film has powerful performances and a gripping atmosphere, but occasionally veers into melodrama and cliché. But it does a lot of things right, and many of its missteps are shameless crowd-pleasers, so you may well find that it pleases you. While the spy-comedy genre is quite tired and the plot twists are translucent the laughs are still there, thanks in large part to Carell. Will quell any urge to say it “missed it by that much,” although it's the truth. Still manages to entertain. Happening, The M. Night Shyamalan’s new thriller continues on the same course of absurd, self-important badness as his last few films. While not as over-the-top in its awfulness as “The Lady in the Water,” “The Happening” is still astonishing in its own, very bad way. A confused-looking Mark Wahlberg plays a science teacher who flees Philadelphia with his estranged wife (Zooey Deschanel) when a mysterious chemical reaction starts causing people to off themselves. This is a thriller without thrills, full of the clunkiest dialogue and most desperate attempts at poignancy. Truly bad. (MS) Cinema Banque Scotia Montréal 1:05pm, 3:30pm, 7:10pm, 9:35pm Incredible Hulk, The An attempt to revive the franchise after the Ang Lee fiasco of five years back, this new Hulk film stars Edward Norton as scientist David Banner, on the run from a general (William Hurt) who wants to take him apart to discover the secrets of his Hulkness. Norton, and romantic interest Liv Tyler, are fine, but the Hulk itself is a sweaty, CGI rubber toy with zero charisma, and the action scenes fail to draw you in. Iron Man A well-made (by director Jon Favreau) and mostly satisfying adaptation of the comic book, with Robert Downey Jr. as the boozy industrialist who builds a high-tech suit to fight bad guys. (The bad guys here are depressingly generic Afghan cave-dwellers, and the movie’s light, casual racism is it’s biggest weakness.) That said, Downey is downright sparkling in the role of Tony Stark, and a strong supporting cast (Jeff Bridges, Gwyneth Paltrow, a very funny Terrence Howard) bring much to the table as well. Les Trois Brigands Beaubien Sat-Sun 10am (free) Love Guru, The I get it: Mike Myers loves the Maple Leafs, dick jokes and funny accents. Yet as much as Myers wants this film about an overzealous self-help guru trying to out-deepak Deepak Chopra to be funny, it's nothing less than an epic failure lacking any comedic sophistication. Overly self-indulgent and juvenile even for a Myers vehicle, “Guru” manages to misfire on all cylinders. A strong contender for worst movie of the year. Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs Modern day geneticists sucking DNA from Tut's guts and melodramatic re-enactments of ancient Egyptian life: this is standard IMAX fare and screams infotainment. There are some sweeping shots of sand dunes and close-ups of the fleshy dead, but ultimately, “Mummies” fails to capitalize on the one reason for going to an IMAX film in the first place: that giant, bulging and immersive screen threatening to suck us into the videodrome. Dude, save your money for “3D Sea Monsters”! (JM) Imax Old Port Thu 2:10pm, Fri 6:30pm; Tue 8:40pm; Sat-Sun 10am, Sat 5:25pm
Promotion, The A workplace comedy about two rival managers (Seann William Scott and John C. Reilly) vying for control of a new big box store. Problem is, the movie can’t really figure out who the bad guy is, and it’s strung together by a lame voice-over and bad writing. (MS) AMC Forum 4:40pm
Silent Light Carlos Reygadas’s latest is a drama of adultery and angst set among a Mennonite community in rural Mexico. Reaching nearly two and a half hours at an unrelentingly glacial pace, this is most definitely not a film for the ADD set, but the peculiar setting keeps things interesting, the all-Mennonite cast is compelling, and the cinematography and editing are truly exceptional. If you have the patience for it, you’ll discover some moments that are as close to perfection as a film can reach. (MF) Ex-Centris (FST) See repertory.
Then She Found Me Helen Hunt directs and stars as a kindergarten teacher desperately trying to get knocked up at 39. Her emotionally immature husband (Matthew Broderick) leaves her, and she's contacted by her birth mother (Bette Midler), a garrulous and gratingly flaky talk show host. Hunt's ability to capture the pain of an infertile woman is poignant, but perhaps to her credit, she doesn't make the character particularly likeable. Ultimately, the film is uniformly well made, but the reflection it holds up to society isn't pretty. (MF) AMC Forum 4:10pm, 9:25pm
Wanted A surprisingly gory action film based on the graphic novel by Mark Millar. James McAvoy plays the loser-turned-assassin opposite his tattooed mentor Angelina Jolie. To say this “borrows” heavily from “The Matrix” and “Fight Club” may be a bit too generous. The action scenes are of course well choreographed and fun, but the script is a bit on the thin side. Might be worth watching if only to catch Morgan Freeman drop the F-bomb. The two cross paths while blowing off steam in Vegas and wind up hitched following a night of drunken debauchery. They've also won $3 million and are ordered to remain together or forfeit their share. Tedious and predictable, this is little more than a rom-com catered to the lowest common denominator. (CS) AMC Forum 6:45pm, 9:25pm When Did You Last See Your Father? In this British drama, middlebrow hunk Colin Firth plays a writer struggling to settle his issues with his dying father (Jim Broadbent), a boisterous man who the angst-ridden Firth never related to while growing up. Director Anand Tucker treads with uncertainty between unsentimental realism and heartstrings-tugging melodrama; the main problem is that it’s never really clear why the hero dislikes his father so much, and the genial Broadbent is actually much more likeable than the mopey and uptight Firth. You Don't Mess with the Zohan Well, Adam Sandler has finally made his “Munich.” Much like Steven Spielberg attempted to deal with his anguish over violence, retribution, the Israeli national identity and its relation to Jews everywhere by making a tense and mournful suspense film, Sandler confronts those same issues with dick jokes, sex jokes and hummus jokes in this very weird movie about an Israeli super-agent who gives it up and moves to Queens to become a hairdresser, where he falls for a Palestinian salon owner. Judged on its own, if that’s even possible, this is a passable Sandler movie with some laughs and some gross-outs; as a comedy, it’s nothing special. As a statement, it’s well-intentioned, but awkwardly incomplete.
