Lounge with me

by SCOTT C

Stéphane Cocke has the job I want. You see, when this mild-mannered Montreal DJ/photographer isn't busy playing records and taking pictures, he can be found pounding the pavement, looking for inspired local artists. Cocke has acted as the official board of selection for the first two installments of local label Jajou's Café Méliès lounge compilations, which are tied to the café of Ex-Centris, and is hard at work on the third. It goes without saying that volumes 1 and 2 must have done something for there to be another, but you'll be happy to know that Mr. Cocke is still looking for songs for volume 3.

Now, having heard both of the previous releases, it's safe to say that he's looking for a particular feel, but if you think your music can complement an espresso, or even a hard drink and a conversation, then you're on the right track. You've got until Oct. 3 to reach Stéphane at cocke@sympatico.ca. If you want to step to the man in person, check him out weekly at the Green Room for Naked Soul Thursdays starting Sept. 9, or at Salon Daomé this Friday, Sept.10, where he might be joined by a special guest.

On the Joyful Rebellion tip, open-minded hip hop heads and groupies alike should check out K-OS when he drops into town this Friday, Sept. 10, for a little in-store action at Goodfoot (3830 St-Laurent). He'll be promoting the aforementioned new album, shaking hands, kissing babies, all that. It all starts at 8:30 p.m., hosted by Metrotalent's own T-Wyze.

Also this Friday, get ready for the crew from Toronto's Red Beet Lounge when they take over Blizzarts for the night. With DJs Sircut Breaker and General Eclectic and singer/dancer Tarik, you'll see why their night in T.O. has been voted one of the best weekly parties in the city by both the Now and Eye newsweeklies for the last two years. I'm talkin' about hip hop, funk, soul and Latin, if you were wondering. Of course, Kobal will be in the house, fresh from a dip down the 401 to play with these guys last week.

Big thanks to all the people who've been coming down to Kunta (2021 St-Denis) every Wednesday night to check out the Spot with me and Andy Williams. We've always got room for more, though, and hope to see some new faces in the place real soon. If you got any soul at all, you'll feel right at home. Big hellos to Star and her sister, who kept the dancefloor moving hard last week - there's more tunes where they came from.

Seven reasons to kidnap me:
1. Masta Ace "Revelations" (M3)
2. LL Cool J "Feel the Beat" 12" (Def Jam)
3. Voice "Mediocre" (Featherperm)
4. Various Thirteen Deep (Sizzle)
5. IsWhat? You Figure It Out (Hyena)
6. Roy Ayers/Erykah Badu "Everybody Loves the Sunshine" (BBE)
7. Feist Let It Die (Universal)
