Vidiot's Box

Goodfellas was among the first wave of films to be released on DVD, and consequently Martin Scorsese's 1990 epic didn't exactly get the super-fancy treatment prestigious movies are used to today. You even had to flip the disc to watch the whole movie, an unfortunate throwback to the dawn of laserdisc technology. This has finally been remedied though, with a very well-done double-disc package, which includes two optional commentaries (one by the cast and crew and the other by the film's inspiration, Henry Hill, and the FBI agent who nabbed him). Funny thing about Hill is how high-profile the celebrity informant seems to be these days. He's a Howard Stern regular and he showed up at the DVD launch… isn't there supposed to be a price on this guy's head?

The disc also contains various featurettes, including "The Workaday Gangster," a humorous and revealing doc about how mundane mob life can really be. You can either rent this wiseguy masterpiece or buy it as part of a box set along with four other Scorsese classics - Mean Streets, After Hours, Who's That Knocking at My Door and Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, all digital and all feature-laden. It's about time! » Mark Slutsky
