Mr./Ms. Dress-Up

by RAF KATIGBAK

St-Laurent's Saphir club seems to be subscribing to that age-old adage: two glammed-out, androgynous, sexpot DJs are better than one. Following up their jam-packed Friday-night rock affair with DJ Plastik Patrik, Saphir has just announced a new Saturday-night shindig starting Aug. 14 featuring the ubiquitous DJ Frigid. All dressed up and no place to go? Why not check out Schizotronic? "For people to have a good time," Frigid recently revealed, "it's always about extremes. At Kink!, people try to dress sexy and have as little on as possible, which is good, but another way to go extreme is to put too much on. ‘Schizo' for me is crazy. I want people to dress up - to mismatch stuff, or have fake blood. I'm trying to push people to do crazy things. I want to incorporate quotes from B-movies. I'm really inspired by that right now. The music will be a little more rock and the electro will be trashier. The vibe will be campy." Cover is $5.

Well, it's that post-Pride lull in Montreal and as the city's cleaning crews sweep up the feathers, rainbow flags and empty popper bottles, Montrealers nurse their collective hangovers and try to return to life as usual. With promoters having blown their wads on big-name guests and big-budget productions, it's no surprise that most club nights and partygoers are keeping a low pro this week. But last weekend's festivities still have people talking - here are a few quick reviews:

Jordan Dare at Aria: Heavy electro on a booming system - yipes! Too bad more people didn't witness the greatness.

Tamerax at the Hard As Fuck party: More like hot as fuck, the party had poor ventilation but the capacity crowd were too busy losing their minds to hardcore to even notice.

25-person massage circle at Is It Sex Or Is It Love?: Nothing says "party" like spontaneously rubbing a group of sweaty strangers. If hell had conga lines, it'd probably look something like that.

Calling all b-girls and b-boys: This Saturday, Aug. 7, Corey K and Soundshaper continue to battle to keep the breaks flame alive with their monthly Shake and Break party at O Patro Vys. Meanwhile over at Aria on Friday night, DJ Mini starts her new residency. Speaking of Aria, the afterhours club just released their impressive August line-up. Scheduled to play this month will be Global Underground U.K. DJ Danny Howells, Israel's Infected Mushroom, Chicago's Green Velvet, Bad Boy Bill and Steve Smooth and finally NYC's K-Swing. Whoa, Nelly!

Finally, drop by Station C this Friday for Witness, a multimedia event showcasing visual arts and music, running from 4 p.m. to 3 a.m.. Acts will include IDM artist Station and hip hop group Side C as well as DJs Toltech, Autacoid, Elemental Kuba, Cosmo Buzzard and DJ Pat. There'll also be some short animation, live painting and lots of affordable art, so why not show some support? Plus, no cover!
