The Parallax View is a Nixon-era thriller that offers more reason to keep your shades drawn, trust no one and never ever board a plane. Warren Beatty stars as a shaggy news reporter investigating a series of bizarre "accidents" that follow the assassination of a senator. (Yes, there is a second shooter). But the trail of bizarre and unexpected deaths lead him to a greater evil: a corporation, one more sinister than the usual culprits that merely exploit children and pollute drinking water to turn a profit. Although often overshadowed by movies like the original The Manchurian Candidate, this '70s political paranoia prophecy is just as timely - especially since the U.S. is tilting toward conspiracy as a common dialectic. Coincidentally, director Alan J. Pakula - whose credits include a film about the mother of all governmental scandals, All the President's Men - was killed in 1998 when a metal pipe lying on the road flew into his windshield. Freak "accident"? That movie hasn't been made yet. Available at La Boîte Noire. » Sarah Rowland
