Fête accompli

by RAF KATIGBAK

With another St-Jean-Baptiste celebration successfully behind us, it's time to nurse our throbbing heads and throw together our homemade hangover cures (raw eggs, curry powder and crushed Advil, anyone?). But while heads will surely be reeling and ears surely bleeding after Thursday's festivities, there's still plenty of reasons to get back on that staggering, stumbling, blurry-eyed and drunken horse this weekend.

Friday, June 25, drop by Blizzarts as DJ Bliss launches his latest mix CD at the Bustin' Loose weekly. Apesh!t promises to be one of Bliss's best efforts to date, chock-a-block with some of the funkiest cuts you're ever likely to hear on a single plastic disc. Don't miss it!

Speaking of plastic, PVC Productions will be throwing another Razzamatazz this Saturday at Missy Bar with a live performance by local electro up-and-comer Quebec Connection (aka Nathaniel Hébert), whose Expo '67-inspired album Bonjour Expo is an impressive slice of retrofuturism (check http://home.total.net/~synaptic/quebec for a sneak preview). Cover is $3. If you didn't catch DJ Mini with Tiga Thursday at Overdose, make sure you check her out at Picnik Electronik this Sunday, June 27, with special guests Alice & the Serial Numbers. Weather permitting, cover is five bucks.

Saturday, after stellar sets at Stereo and Gravity, NYC's Manny Ward will be returning to Montreal, this time at Circus where he'll show house heads why he was picked by Danny Tenaglia as his replacement for the Be Yourself party at ARC. Stereo club darling David Morales returns to the place he calls home this Saturday for what is sure to be another extended party for his many fans.

Also Saturday, make sure you catch cockney spit-slinger the Streets over at Club Soda as he and his band bring their London style to all the anoraks, baps, chummies and whatever else they call people in that crazy, crooked-toothed town of theirs. Oi!

Monday night, leftfield music nerds should head over to the Goethe Institute (418 Sherbrooke E.) for an evening of experimental electronic music as locals Aelab, Nathan McNinch, VROMB and special German guest Thomas Köner present an evening of mind-warping bleep and drone. Cover is $10 and showtime is 8:30 p.m., seating is limited so get there early!

Warp is the word next Tuesday at Blizzarts, where DJs Ram Dac and Crispian's Plateau Flexout weekly will be hosting a special Warp Records night. All you IDM fans make sure to drop by for an evening of music culled exclusively from the back catalogue of the legendary experimental music label.

While Angel Moraes has since severed his ties to Gravity, his presence in Montreal is far from departed. Next Wednesday, June 30, catch the sound guru/DJ at le Parking as he delivers the bumpin' New York-style house he's loved for. Over at Upperclub, West Coast DJ and crowd favourite Mark Farina will be on hand to rock the spot in his own deep and ever-funky style.
