Any woman on HRT should be aware of the risks to her own health first, and if you're not, please acquaint yourself with them. Dan Strasbourg, who works at the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, surveyed several of his colleagues and came back to me with this: "Basically urine is a mixture of water and toxins from the body. Though we are aware of certain cultures that ingest it for health purposes and some people feel it does have benefits, it's a practice we don't advocate, since it's human waste." In terms of health risks involved in imbibing the urine of a woman on HRT, I guess it's like any medication; some of it gets voided, so yes, your partner will be consuming a certain quantity of it. Whether it is enough to impact his health is not known, according to Strasbourg's sources.

Lyba Spring, my contact at Toronto Public Health, reached the head pharmacist at Wyeth, who also said the details of this practice as it relates to HRT are not recorded in their studies and, as such, they have no information on the subject. A doctor Spring spoke to said that everyone pees some hormones out. Don't forget that you are replacing hormones, albeit with equine ones, that were formerly there to begin with. This means that people who ingest the urine of women who are not on HRT are also taking in female hormones, and I have yet to read any reports of feminization as a result of this. This doesn't mean I would be at all surprised if your boyfriend grew a nice little rack. Some people are extremely sensitive to estrogen, so much so that they'll grow breasts via the most inadvertent sources. In Woman: An Intimate Geography, Natalie Angier writes of a six-year-old boy who developed gynecomastia because the vitamins he was taking were stamped by the same machine that produced estrogen pills. Either way, it's not a big risk, in my opinion. If your boyfriend grows boobs and doesn't like them, he shouldn't drink your pee.
