. . . and why?

Any cheap neglected area is fair game. Send in the developers, the real-estate con-men and Pied Piper PR guys. The gullible, naïve politically correct 30-somethings will follow like obedient mice • Any suburb... 'cause that's where all the drugs are! • Anything but the Plateau • Anywhere where the crackheads aren't • Anywhere with no condo in sight • As in arson capital? Probably Hochelaga • As long as it is no longer NDG, with all the breeders and their SUVs driving up the bloody price of everything, I don't care! • I'm not saying - we don't want prices to inflate now, do we?

Ahuntsic, because it can't get any worse • Atwater Market area because of the location, cleanliness, quiet open spaces, market and canal • Brossard, because of the new skatepark • Chinatown... the girls! • Chinatown: great location, too-cool vintage architecture and no one's on to it yet. Oh, and a great way to learn Chinese! • Côte-St-Luc, it's where the Jews are at! • Frontenac, with its odours of chocolate, beer and dogfood. Does it get any better? • The South Shore because it has a lot of good people who love to go out, get hammered and have a good time

Hochelaga-Maisonneuve for the best fashion tips • Hochelaga-Maisonneuve because a lot of poor people still live there • Hochelaga-Maisonneuve for all the hot Quebecer girls

Île des Soeurs: easily accessible to downtown, open spaces, parks, bike trails• LaSalle: new condos, lots of green spaces, Angrignon Park, good bike paths, good organized sports for kids, megastores, multiethnic • Latin Quarter: vegetarian food, hot clubs and hot people • Laval because we rock and it's FULL of hot chicks!

Little Burgundy because it's beautiful and well located • Little Burgundy, though gentrification has already begun, rents are going up and blacks are moving out • Little Italy because of all the great food and cafés and the market • Little Italy: cute little Italian men drinking coffee • McGill Ghetto: hot women in comfortable clothing

Mile-End because it is the hottest place to find cute anglo lesbians (can't be found in the Village) • Mile-End because it hasn't been infiltrated by McGill kids yet • Mile-End cuz it's where all the ex-Plateau kids have fled to avoid the tourists and suburbanites • Mile-End cuz it exudes coolness without the pretentious & commercial side of the Plateau • Mile-End: the bagels, the rotis, the delicious coffee and the Brazilian hangouts

Montreal North: it's where Santa lives! • Montreal West: it's quiet, safe with big old trees and far from the city traffic, strip clubs and hookers • Montreal West: old people!

NDG: it's identity is ingrained, not transported from afar • NDG for the awesome architecture, easy access to drugs and TREES! • NDG cuz it's so gangster! • NDG near Sherbrooke West because it's still cheap and isn't full of dirtbags • NDG, it's the best place to toke! • NDG: Russians, chess and cool diners • NDG because it's God's little acre • NDG: it all has to come back where it left from

Near McGill in Old Montreal: less crowded than St-Laurent, more hip • North Hampstead: people love upper-middle-class Jews • Nuns' Island: it's so beautiful. Why is this retardo city built around the mountain when the shores are nicer?

Parc Ex - people are renovating it and one day (!!) it will be snazzy • Parc Ex because everyone's had enough of Mile-End • Parc Ex: poor people, artists and lots of ethnic diversity creates a culturally healthy environment that attracts us whities • Park Ex = Bollywood!

Plateau cause it's so trendy • The Plateau is just the bomb right now, this is where I want to be • The Plateau, it's funky fresh! • Plateau: the women, the atmosphere, the flying monkeys

Point St-Charles. High crime = less pedestrians. Warehouses = loud music! • Point St-Charles, because they are finally fixing that shit up • Point St-Charles. It's near the canal and not nearly as scary as it used to be • Point St-Charles. It's what the Plateau used to be: cheap, close to downtown, has character, old buildings, a neighbourhood vibe and no martini bars. Throw in the canal for bonus points

Rosemont: beautiful, spacious, affordable housing, parks, bars, restos, Beaubien Cinema and hipsters already moving in • Rosemont because Masson street is a nice, friendly place where people aren't as snobby as on the Plateau

Ste-Catherine near Jet, Circus and Club Dome. What other reason do you need? • St-Denis and Ste-Cath. Get my pot then turn around and get a blowjob from a hooker • St-Laurent & Ste-Catherine (Red Light District): Hooker buffet, plenty of bars in walking distance, concentration of most major festivals… just a chill fuckin' place for the summer!

St-Henri because cheap = students = party • St-Henri: lots of hip black people • St-Henri because it's on the right side of the tracks and has that old-style Québécois flavour • St-Henri because it's got a dirty, trashy and underground kinda thing going for it • St-Henri: young professionals buy there, renovate and grow pot!

St-Leonard because it's full of Italians! • St-Leonard: it's the new Westmount, but without the snobbiness

Verdun - cheap ass and no class! • Verdun: youth alley culture, 4th St. & LaSalle climbing web, no alcohol except in your backyard while wearing a muscle shirt and listening to 50 Cent • Verdun because of the return of the mullet • Verdun, because they have a cult video store and good places to eat cake! • Verdun. It's got that gritty, bleak industrial chic to it • Verdun is so hot right now! It's so poor it's cool!

Ville Émard: Monk Ave is the next Mont-Royal • Ville St-Laurent... the ho's • Villeray - people are humble • The Village because it's getting cooler and cooler to be gay

West Island because people drive nice cars • West Island: low taxes, clean streets, plenty of activities • West Island: influx of colo-rectal surgeons!

Corrections & stuffers

Thanks to everyone who voted for the Best of Montreal. This year, we went to the greatest lengths ever to weed out the stuffers who try to unfairly influence the results. We insisted that paper ballots be mailed in to the office rather than dropped off in mass bundles (stuffers don't like paying for stamps); online, we checked cookies and IPs and vapourized repeat offenders. See you next year Dugmor!

While we do our best to make sure the addresses and phone numbers of the winners are accurate, mistakes can sometimes occur. Send your corrections to us by May 20 (to be printed in our May 27 issue) to letters@mtl-mirror.com or through the mail (465 McGill, 3rd floor, Montreal, H2Y 4B4).
