Spring stuff

Local producer/DJ Grandtheft called me all the way from Toronto the other day to tell me about a show his Groundwerks crew has planned for May 5 at le Swimming. They're on their way back from a few gigs out west in Whistler, and can't wait to fire it up at home. With the gravelly-voiced Blu Rum 13 held up Stateside by good ol' homeland-security foolishness, it's up to mic vet D-Shade, Kali, Eillen Quashi, Mike Baker, Metrix and Grandtheft to hold it down that night. Groundwerks produces hip hop, R&B and reggae to get you up off the wall, and has coming releases from all the aforementioned artists. Keep your head up.

This Saturday, May 1, you can crack a window into the mind of artists like Other, Gene Starship, End, Labrona and about 30 others when they take part in a downhome catered vernissage at 353 Richmond, just two blocks west of Guy and Nôtre-Dame. Music all night courtesy of Kops Crew man Maysr and friends, as well as live painters galore.

Christian Pronovost busts things wide open when he commences with another Lost Heroes Session at Salon Daomé's Soulmeka Fridays this week. On April 30, expect the "master rocker" to dip deep into his bag of tricks for only the best in funk, jazz, Afro, Latin, disco, rock and other groove-related stuff.

Local label Bully Records have just released a CD called Lunch Money Singles, featuring a collection of the left-limping instrumental seven-inches released on the label so far. You'll find tracks from Sixtoo, Controller7, Simahlak, P-Love and lots more. All overhead expenses and costs incurred by Bully have been extracted from snot-nosed, awkward children who shouldn't have been flashing their money around anyways...

New wave superthugs Chromeo take to the stage on Saturday, May 1, for a special evening at Cabaret. P-Thug and Dave One will be joined by the live stylings of Evening, DJ A-Trak, Simahlak and Sean Kosa. If you got a copy of the defected Chromeo vinyl, hold on to that shit. That's Ebay money in the bank. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door, which cracks at 10 p.m.
