The Incubator

Good causes

First things first. Coco Café has slated a full night strictly for the boys on the mic this coming Saturday, March 28. The monthly showcase of live spoken word will be dedicating this week's show to the memory of Rohan Wilson, whose mysterious death still has Montreal's black community asking a lot of unanswered questions. Make your way down to Quartier Latin this weekend for what will probably be a very special night. All proceeds will be going to Wilson's family.

Tonight, Thursday, March 25, another great cause opens its doors to the people when the Canada Tibet Committee teams up with Therapy over at Stereorbar. With the Dalai Lama set to touch down in Canada in April, the CTC is encouraging Canada to negotiate peace between China and Tibet, and that's where Therapy comes in. The 2004 Free Tibet Tour consists of a three-city party and some heavy hitters. Not only do you get Jojo Flores, Miles Moore, Trevor Walker, Rise Ashen and Andrew Carter, but you also get Toronto's King Sunshine and a live performance by U.K. import Shaun Escofferey. A portion of the door will go directly to the continuing development of Canada's role in Tibet's quest for peace.

This Friday, March 26, the crew down at Off the Hook are throwing a do to launch their brand spanking new Web site. Located at 1021 Ste-Catherine W., the store is having a group exhibition featuring some of the city's leading underground and graffiti artists, like Sam Flores and Giant One, and the music of DJ Kobal and Andy Williams. The fun starts at 8 p.m., and there better be some "refreshments" up in there. Speaking of Kobal and Mr. Williams, these two are turning up the Afro-funk once again this weekend with another installment of the party of the same name. The action's at Espace Cube (215a Murray, metro Bonaventure) on Saturday, March 27. The last time they played here, they scored a trip to Paris - where they'll be opening for the legendary Roy Ayers on April 8! Nuts!

Got a hankerin' for sex and gossip tabloids, hard-boiled detective novels and strange tourism posters? Check out Print Culture and City Sensation at McGill 's McLennan-Redpath Library (3459 McTavish), from March 26 to April 20. If you're at all interested in the connection between Montreal, New York, sensation, glamour and grime, then check out this exhibit. The vernissage is this Friday, March 26.

Well, I'm off to the U.K. for the next 10 days, and I'm happy to say that I'll be filing the Incubator from London next week. Y'all can still send me the info on upcoming happenings for the next two weeks, and I'll sift through what I can. Any locals with new music to plug should get that shit in the mail pronto. Spring is just around the corner…

Three reasons you know you got soul:
1. Dessy DiLauro/Ric'Key Pageot "Dear Mama" (independent)
2. Clara Hill "Restless Times" (Sonar Kollektiv)
3. Terri Walker "Fake" (Def Soul)
