Vidiot's Box

Those looking for Christ-like characters in movies (and who have already seen The Passion of the Christ 28 times) may want to check out Vanishing Point, the landmark '70s road chase movie.

Forget that the central character, Kowalski (Barry Newman), has no redeeming qualities. Nope, that didn't stop audiences from turning this film into a cult sensation. Don't worry about the fact that this movie barely has a plot and that no character motivation is ever offered - none of that silly rot is needed, really. Instead, we see the mean and cool Kowalski commit to driving from Denver to San Francisco in a mere 15 hours, with the help of some trusty speed pills. If it only weren't for those miserable, dreadful cops that he keeps having to dodge. I kind of liked the existential element of this movie, with Kowalski a stand-in for our collective sorry lives of drudgery. (Not everyone agreed; critic Jon Carroll bluntly stated: "Burn this film.") An odd but defiant movie, drug soaked, aimless and loaded with wicked auto stunts. » Matthew Hays
