Disko Akimbo

The Hershey highway

Whether or not you believe that Valentine's Day is corporate propaganda used to fill the consumerist gap between Christmases and that it only serves to perpetuate the monogamous oppression that is the ideological basis for the State Monopoly Capitalism that is destroying this world, one thing's for sure. Come Feb. 15, chocolate will be on sale everywhere, and that's a good thing. If (night)life is like a box of chocolates, then this week let Disko Akimbo be that cardboard picture-guide thingy that helps you separate the yummy, nougat-filled, circle-shaped parties from the icky, orange-cream, triangle ones.

If you're looking for the cutest crowd on Valentine's Day then head on over to the SAT on Saturday for a special intimate edition of Neon Love, with special guests on the decks Domie Le Touch and Oliver T. Class, the Swiss-born New Yorkers behind the hot label A Touch of Class. Expect a crunchy layer of rock wrapped in creamy electro with a velvety disco centre. Yum!

The sweetest spot in town has got to be the new Circus afterhours. With impeccable décor and a booking mandate that focuses on the local scene instead of filling the coffers of already iced-out international stars, this may just be what the fledgling post-3 a.m. scene needs. This Friday, Feb. 13, ring in V-day with a special set from DJ Philgood, DJ Mini and GO'brien, a local lineup so sweet you'll get a toothache! Or, for a twisted Chicago prelude to Valentine's, catch the incomparable Green Velvet at Aria.

After a scrum-diddly-umcious opening last week featuring Wolf Parade, Ten Commandments and DJ Alex Lemieux, Montreal's hottest temporary art space Pavilion (1206 St-Laurent) is gearing up for Saturday night's record release party for T.O.'s electro/metal imprint FameFame records. Artists theblameshifter, IBM, 11tyOne and DJ Jubal Brown will be there, and you should be too. Cover is $5, doors at 8 p.m.

Of course this month we're not only celebrating the love day, but also the 20th anniversary of CBC Radio's Brave New Waves. Don't miss the crew this Friday at O Patro Vys as they party down with DJs Vincent Lemieux and Fishead, who will be mixing a record a minute for every year BNW has been on the air (that's 20 records in 20 minutes for those of you not into "fancy book-learnin'").

Also on the anniversary tip, check out the chock-full-o'-nutz IDJ Crew this Saturday as they blow out two candles on their V-day B-day cake. Guests will include T.O. junglists Jocelyn Dee, Queensyze and Code Blue along with the usual suspects. Call 401-6774 for details. This week, Junglist Fridays celebrate four glorious years of steady runnin' tings over at Blue Dog with residents Stabba, Krinjah, Corey K and Rcola. Big up the Montreal Massive!

Over at Gravity on Feb. 14, house heads will rejoice as Angel Moraes and Alain Vinet are reunited behind the decks like chocolate and peanut butter, and next Wednesday, don't miss San Fran dirty dance trio Numbers as they awkwardly disco-rock their way into your hearts at that new space Club Social Espagnol du Quebec (4388 St-Laurent). Yowza!

Just say no to coconut and chocolate! Eeewww! Diskoakimbo@sympatico.ca
