Vidiot's Box

Those who adore the works of comic mastermind Ingmar Bergman will be thrilled at MGM's latest boxed set, The Ingmar Bergman Collection. This anthology of carefully selected features will have you rolling on the floor, including such wickedly witty gems as Persona, Hour of the Wolf and Shame (that last title says it all).

Every one of these movies is hilarious in its own special, morose Bergmanesque way. (An added bonus is that inherently zany Swedish language everyone's speaking.) On board for all the fun are Bergman regulars Max Von Sydow and Liv Ullmann, drumming up chuckles and smiles at every instant. The nice thing about a boxed set like this is that you just know it's going to be a hit with the whole family; the toddlers will take to Bergman's trademark rapid-fire pacing, while grandma and grandpa will undoubtedly love the auteur's ongoing obsession with themes of death, dying and the deceased. You'll fall out of your chair, couch, ottoman, or whatever it is you happen to be sitting in with laughter - I strongly recommend panic buying! » Matthew Hays
