Vidiot's Box

For absolute diehard, hardcore, extreme, you're-soaking-in-it fans of the Alien franchise, your wet-dream box set has arrived. Alien Quadrilogy is the nine-disc (count 'em, nine!) anthology that features 45 hours of bonus material on the four-film series. This set features both Ridley Scott and James Cameron's director's-cut versions of their respective films, while also including the original cuts of each film. Scott, Cameron, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, John Hurt, Dan O'Bannon and Sigourney Weaver all offer fairly insightful commentary. (Notably absent is David Fincher: I'm presuming his infamous squabbles with Weaver over Alien 3 left him out of consideration for cooperating on this package.)

After getting to the fourth-disc mark, even people very fond of the first two movies (let's face it, the latter two didn't work quite so well), might find the word "overkill" springing to mind. Still, Scott and Cameron proved that sci-fi monster movies were the perfect place to float elaborate metaphors for rape and the Vietnam War, among other things - and these two unforgettable genre movies make for endlessly pleasurable repeat viewings.
