Christmas is coming: Every Christmas season, it never fails. I get two questions over and over again. The first one is, which one of the glut of movies dumped into cinemas is most worth seeing? The other question is, what the hell do I get for the film buff in my life?
By far, the best gift suggestion I can think of for this holiday season is so dang quick and easy you'll be shocked by its sheer simplicity. Posteropolis is a site filled with vintage movie posters - many of them gorgeous, ranging from films like Apocalypse Now to Heavy Traffic - as well as nuttier and more obscure entries like the Cold War inspired Brainwashed. I've surfed the site (www.posteropolis.com) and was incredibly impressed with their selection of original movie posters (as opposed to all the repro items you see virtually everywhere). There are over 1,000 here - and these are the real deal! A quick query to their site and I found they are expertly manned; one of their hardworking minions got back to me promptly and told me that, indeed, they did have some posters for campy old Irwin Allen Disaster Movies from the '70s. (Precisely what grandma's been begging me for for years!) Check it out - prices are more than reasonable and Posteropolis promises free delivery in the Montreal area. A sublime gift idea for the film freak or geek in your life.
In the local production department, Montreal writer-director Hidai Friedman will present his feature film, the romantic comedy That's Life...?, at Concordia's De Seve Cinema this Saturday and next (Dec. 6 and 13) at 7 p.m. (Admission $5). The film tells the story of an entertainment lawyer and a screenwriter who hook up despite the odds in the mixed-up business that is commercial cinema. The leads (Ciara Pentney and Jason Moran) do their best, but the script is often more than a bit confusing and the entire feature suffers as a result of the poor sound recording, making it almost impossible to hear what the actors are saying at certain points in the movie.
