With a title like Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell, this '74 movie sounded like the ultimate Halloween rental. And indeed, this final entry in the Hammer 'stein cycle does offer some typically campy laffs. Peter Cushing again plays the misguided doc, while David Prowse (Darth Vader) plays the monster. Here, Frankenstein is thought to be dead but is hiding out where no one would ever think to find him: in a home for the hopelessly insane. At night he lurks about looking for nutjobs with much-needed body parts (no, he's not a circuit queen). The cover blurb promised that my blood would run cold, but at best I'd say it ran lukewarm by final credit roll. Still, I did get a serious laugh at half time, when the monster is unveiled: these f/x really are from hell!
Speaking of which, one of my fave films of last year is now out on DVD. Hell House is the incredible documentary about a Christian-themed spook house. Well worth a visit even if you've already seen it - the extras include two sublimely funny additional scenes.
