If you're one of those souls who is blessed with gym discipline or a YMCA membership, then you know how satisfying the lingering burn of energized muscles can be. People like me, on the other hand, have to wait until groups like Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings come to town before I realize the extraordinary hidden potential of a sweaty, two-hour, go-hard dancefloor workout. If you were at the show last Saturday at Sala, then you ache like me. I wonder if they have a "Funk Workout" at the Y?
When Quantic dips into Quartier Latin this Saturday, Oct. 11, he'll also be crashing Gary "Troubleman" Tremblay's birthday celebration. I haven't seen Gary for a while, not since he started working for X-Box (hmmm…) but I'll wish him a happy birthday just the same.
You must know that Aesop Rock and Mr. Lif are on their way back to the city. This lyrically balanced show makes its way to the SAT on Sunday, Oct. 19, so make some room on the calendar.
In local news, I almost forgot that Sixtoo introduced me to Anticon super MC Sage Francis a couple of weeks ago when I was waiting for the bus. Sage was in town recording a few tracks with Sixtoo for an upcoming release. Montreal Afro-beat dons Afrodizz are getting ready for a show at Kola Note on Oct. 24 with Dibondoko and DJ Andy Williams. At last word, London tastemaker and Jazz Café booking machine Adrian Gibson had got wind of their live CD, and was making some plans for the future. Catch them before they break, 'cause it won't be long! Look for the new comp Urban Lab Vol. 1 hitting stores this week. DJ X-Scape presents this look at a few local hip hop groups like Catburglaz and Rainmen (!). I'm also looking forward to the next installment of Return to the Roxy, the old-school extravaganza at la Sala Rossa on Saturday, Oct. 25. I keep missing this party for some reason, but not this time. Can somebody send me the lineup for this night? I'm showing up with the crew and it would be nice to know what's in store. Thanks. Next week, we dissect the Montreal Electronic Groove Festival from the inside out…
