I was somewhat dismayed to read the excellent reviews of the recent American release of Robert Evans' autobiography, The Kid Stays in the Picture. This was one of my favourite films of last year, and I shelled out for my own copy of the DVD when the Canadian release happened months earlier. The American version features a 17-minute scene of Dustin Hoffman and Roy Scheider trying to out-do each other in a pair of hilarious Evans impersonations. I haven't actually seen this sequence, because, for some seriously annoying reason, it's not included on the Canuck version. How do I get my money back? Why are we getting ripped off with inferior DVD versions north of the 49th parallel? Call the UN or something, this is really pissing me off.
Fargo, arguably the greatest Coen Brothers collaboration, has been released on special edition DVD. To coincide with this event, the real town of Fargo, Minnesota, will unveil a statue of Frances McDormand in her guise as the pregnant cop. Townsfolk claim, apparently in all seriousness, that the movie gave their burg a major shot of tourism promo.
