Lots of this and that buzzin’ around town this week with the Pop Montreal festival getting underway. What some dismissed as a little local festival thingy has already grown out of its diapers, and into some size 6X long pants—healthy growth indeed. If you’re looking for shows to check, tonight, Sept. 25, Euphrates, Rugged Intellect, Loe Pesci and Apokalyptik join Toronto MC Reign at Saphir for a night of MTL/T.O. hip hop. Make sure you’re at Club Soda on Friday, Sept. 26, where you can peep the jazz/turntablism assault of Soundclash starting at 8:15 p.m., followed by performances from T-Dot’s queen of the mic Eternia, Shades of Culture, Warsawpack and Sans Pression. Look for another appearance from Halifax-man Scratch Bastid when he returns to Blizzarts on Friday, Sept. 26, where he’ll play with Simon B and Simahlak. They’ll also be joined by a royal guest who just happens to be in town for all the hoopla. On both Thursday and Friday at O Patro Vys, get ready for Live Ambiance and Beats when the extended Moondata collective brings you a mix of genres, soundscapes and the all important beats! Members of dB, Ark of Infinity, Kalmunity, Parkside Jones and Electronic Humans Guild and people like P Love, Alexis O’Hara and DJ Luv will all be contributing their two cents, so be there! Got a note from Sharon Jones first thing Monday morning reminding me that the Daptone Funk and Soul Revue is coming back to town on Oct. 3 for a show at la Sala Rossa. Sharon Jones is hands down one of the illest live shows that anyone is ever gonna see, so if you can squeeze into Sala with the other 299 of us, you’re set. I also got word that Brighton boy Quantic is returning to Montreal for a show at Quarter Latin on Saturday, Oct.11, along with Tru-Thoughts Records headman Rob Luis.
