No way osé!

>> DJ Frigid's already controversial Kink promises party perfection

by RAF KATIGBAK

Okay, how often has this happened to you: you've been looking forward to seeing your favourite band for weeks and tonight's the night. You spend extra time getting gussied up and you've got your rock-out knob turned up to 11. You get there, dance, pump your fist in the air, hoot and holler for about an hour and then, all too soon, it's over. The band has left the stage, leaving you with rock-show-blue-balls. Your first reaction is anger - why can't they keep playing? Then confusion - where do we go now? Then acceptance - I guess we go home. While RSBB syndrome has become all too common in Montreal's nightlife, one person has set out to do something about it.

Following the runaway success of his weekly electro-rock night, Overdose at the Parking, DJ Frigid's new, monthly Kink is set to deliver the whole package. "It's the perfect night out," says Frigid. "You get to drink cheap, you get the bands, you get the dancing and the DJs and VJs - basically, you get all the great things that have been happening at clubs all in one night, including lots of surprises."

With so many elements making up Kink's electro/rock 'n' roll/burlesque experience - including decor by Montreal designer YSO, 1920s- to '40s-themed make-up by KROM, a peep show performance by Lola the Flamenco Goddess, Electroclash hotties W.I.T. and, of course, the DJ himself - it was a given that Frigid and his associate Miss Lisa would hit a few snags along the way. The main problem was the premature censorship of their flyer, deemed "too osé" by staff at the Musée Juste Pour Rire, where the event will be held.

"When I showed them my Overdose flyers, they said it was great and they were really excited. But when they saw me in a G-string on the Kink flyer, they said that it was a bit too much." But as it turns out, Frigid sees this as a blessing in disguise. "Now, with the censored version, it looks like I'm totally naked on the bike, so if that's the way they censor it, then I'm really happy. What's cool about the people at the Musée Juste Pour Rire is that they're really open to anything at the night - it's just the promotion that they were worried about - so there really are no limits to what we can do once the party starts. I just hope people will get naked."

Kink 1 with W.I.T. at Le Studio on Saturday, August 23, 9PM, $15 Kink 2 with Stink Mitt at Le Studio on Saturday, September 20, 9PM, $15
