HALstyle: There’s something about giant mainframe computers, wide collars and ’70s hairstyles that is so ripe for exploitation by people looking for the next retro thing to brand as cool. The Computing at Columbia Web site covers a decidedly uncool topic—the history of computers at the venerable New York school—with incredible visuals, including the arcane IBM 285 Pneumatic Tabulator and the Enterprise bridge-like IBM 360/91. Good nerdy fun at www.columbia.edu/acis/history/timeline.html. Fun’n’Games: Here’s a fun one for next time you’re people-watching in some hip enclave of the city: hipster bingo. It’s like the old game of licence-plate bingo, except you score for spotting too-small sweaters, chunky black glasses, tattoos of stars and ironic trucker hats. Or you can use it as a tool for realizing how stereotypical and the-same your clumsy attempts to be hip and different have made you. Really have something to cry about, you little emo wuss, at www.catbirdseat.org/catbirdseat/bingo.html. Comments? Michael Citrome |
