These boys are bad

>> The BBCM shakes up this very queer
weekend with Twist

by MATTHEW HAYS

Rubbing up against Divers/Cité is Twist, the Bad Boy Club Montreal's weekend of decadent parties, cocktails and soirées. The events are all about getting in touch with your inner circuit queen. And Robert Vézina, the BBCM's cofounder and ringmaster, says the 10th anniversary of the summer Twist called for something distinctive and unique. This year, he boasts, he and his BBCM musclemen will be rolling out the pink carpet.

"Glitzy, shiny, lots of silver," he says, describing the look and feel of Twist X. "We've been very lucky with the success of the Twist event. People who love the Black & Blue in October have rewarded our party planning by coming to Twist as well. It's a big deal for out-of-towners as well as the home team."

Revellers will hit the ground running on Friday night with two choices: Twist à Gogo at Campus or Twist Friday at Stereo. New this year is a new location for the hugely successful Tea Dance on Saturday. The Island Dance will take place at the Parc Jean-Drapeau, under sculptor Calder's famous work, "L'Homme," which was commissioned for Expo '67. (Partygoers can take the metro yellow line to stop Parc Jean-Drapeau.) "This is our third tea dance," says Vézina. "I think it's been important, as some people want a break from the Village, where so many of the weekend parties are going on. The space really is beautiful. When you're dancing under or beside the sculpture, you're surrounded by nature." Spinning at the event will be three of Montreal's finest DJs, Patrick Guay, Norm Robert and Gilles Massicotte.

That night comes the main event, held at Medley. Those shameless hussies, the BBCM Dancers, will be presenting a new show choreographed especially for Twist's 10th birthday, titled Shine, created by Radical 5. DJs on deck will be local scenester Serge Duchesne, New Orleans' Joe Gauthreaux and New York's James Andersen. You may want to have a strong cup of coffee before going, seeing as this party is slated to run until 8 a.m.

Sunday afternoon features a Foam Party at Parking, with Montreal's Stéfane Lippé and Toronto's Neill Macleod. And that evening is the Twist Encore at Stereo, where Mat Ste-Marie and Alex Lauterstein will put the final punch in the weekend partying.

Twist runs from today, July 31, to Sunday, Aug. 3. Information and tickets: 875-7026 or www.bbcm.org
