This is when the job really rocks. Two DVDs arrived this week, cheering me up to no end. The Brady Bunch Movie and A Very Brady Sequel, the best adaptations of trash TV series to the big screen, ever, without a doubt.

Shelley Long and Gary Cole are the nutty parents who oversee their joint brood, riding the original series in a manner that is equal parts skewering and loving ode to the utter naïveté of the source material. There are cameos by original players and lots of winking and mugging from maid Alice, who seems to actually hear the odious laugh track from the TV incarnation.

And forget The Godfather II, A Very Brady Sequel really is the greatest follow- up ever created (don’t know how the Academy overlooked this). Best of all is a drug-induced animated vision one character has, in which the aesthetic of the cheeseball animated series The Brady Kids is resurrected. These fine filmmakers spared no attention to detail, and the results are clear in this DVD duo, a must for any lover of pop trash.
