Burning questions

by SCOTT C

Got a disturbing note from Eric B this week. He’s the guy who threw that loft party in the sweet space on Casgrain, Studio Tn Voum (pronounced "tennavoom"), where you had to take off your shoes to get in a few months back. Well, it seems that some idiots with nothing better to do broke into the space, stole his amp, computer and Visa, and then decided to set fire to the place. This is a studio that housed yoga, modern dance and tai chi on top of the parties that were going on there, so the loss affects a few more people besides Eric. A fundraiser is in the works to try and get things back to normal, but if you have a space, or some talents that you’d like to use to help out, get in touch with Eric at ericbrotto@hotmail.com or 817-9925.

Tonight, Thursday, July 17, the people from Santropol Roulant will be hosting a fundraiser over at Blizzarts called Get a Groove On. DJs Signal Smoke, Static and Mini will be spinning to raise money for the organization’s latest intergenerational project, which tells the stories of the many dedicated people who come together to make those meals on wheels work. This one’s early, starting at around 5 p.m. and winding up at 10 p.m., but your $5 will be going to a great cause. The Web address is www.santropolroulant.org.

Saturday, July 25, is the second installment of Hot Buttered Soul over at O Patro Vys where you’ll get to see DJ Kobal teaming up with Dubline for a night of soul, funk and Afrobeat, among other things. Nice flyer, guys.

Local boys team up for a show at Foufounes Électriques on Wednesday, July 30, called Hip Hop Unity. The $10 all-ages ticket features Shades of Culture, Rugged Intellect, Catburglaz, Rawgged MC and FP Crew, along with DJ Suga Needlz and some special guest dancers. These cats are trying to shed some light on what happens when groups come together to promote the music and the culture first, so get out and support.

This Saturday, July 19, at le Medley, the DMC Canadian Championship does its thing, running down the table skills of 15 DJs from across the country. This year’s event is being thrown as part of the Just for Laughs Festival, but hopefully there will be no jokers up on stage. In town for the competition is Halifax native Skratch Bastid, who’ll also be spinning at Blizzarts on Friday, July 18, with Simahlak and Simon B. Size him up the night before, and then check him at the big show. Now that’s a plan.

Seven reasons you stepped right in it:
1. Dudley Perkins "Momma" (Stones Throw)
2. Sir Mix-A-Lot "Big Johnson" (BMG)
3. Ghislain Poirier "Grey Space" feat. Diverse (Chocolate)
4. Gangstarr "Put Up or Shut Up" (Virgin)
5. Pepe Braddock "4" 12" (Avantisme)
7. Red Astaire "Follow Me" 12" (Gamm)
