Show me, Lord

by SCOTT C

About two weeks ago, a good friend and I parted ways at some ridiculous hour in the morning after a night of music and foolishness. While I was still able to walk home following our good times, he had to focus all of his attention on the simple task of putting one foot in front of the other. He told me that he was so mashed, he spent most of his early-morning hike praying out loud, asking God to somehow deliver him home, or to provide some sort of celestial fast-track to his bed. Well, the Lord works in mysterious ways, as my now-sober friend insists that God provided him with a bike, an unlocked and heavenly mode of transportation that seemed to appear from nowhere. He was spirited home in minutes. So I was thinking, if we all got drunk and prayed out loud asking God to extend the barrage of shows so indicative of summer in Montreal to the rest of the year, we might just get lucky.

Not that I’m ungrateful for what’s been going on as well as what’s in store - it’s been great to actually have multiple-event conflicts happening for once. If you’re pissed that you can’t be three places at once, then somebody’s doing something right. Tonight, June 19, you should make your way to Quai des Brumes for the record release party for Atach Tatuq’s new record La guerre des tuqs. DJ Naes and the crew will be holding it down hard from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., proudly repping their second album. The boys from Heavyweight ride again with a new exhibit called Jazz Visions that will be featured at a new spot called Gallery 1225 (1225 de la Montagne). The show opens June 26 with the vernissage running from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Pieces will include paintings from past Jazz Festivals as well as works from other international festivals and events that are now on sale for serious collectors for the first time. Music will be provided by Peter Gibson and the live jazz stylings of the Gibbernauts. On Sunday, June 22, all serious crate-diggers should head down to Blizzarts when La Jazztek Sundays welcomes any record collector’s wet dream in the form of Milwaukee’s Tom Noble. He owns Lotus Land Records down there and boasts some of the most ridiculous records you ever heard. He’ll be bringing that mix of deep funk, Brazilian grooves and crazy space disco to Montreal this weekend. Don’t forget residents Dan Zacks, Nick Osicka and Naval Aviator will be there as well. Saturday, June 21, is Moonstarr night at the Goods over at la Sala Rossa, but enough about that. My man Boris put me on to Gold Chains (www.gold-chains-worldwide.com) about a year ago, and now this analog/electro minimalist MC brings his thing to MTL on June 26 at la Sala Rossa.

Seven reasons Stefania might spell her name differently:
1. Amral’s Trinidad Cavaliers "90% of Me Is You" (Calypan)
2. T-Love "Who Smoked Sunshine" 12" (Virgin)
3. Madlib Shades of Blue (Blue Note)
4. Jinadu "Natural Thing" Domu’s Mutant Soul remix (Bitches Brew)
5. Moonstarr "Movin’ On" Moonstarr remix (PTR)
6. Jay Dee Ruff Draft EP (Mummy)
7. Sixtoo vs. Simahlak "Sim’s Thing" 7" (Bully)
