Native Tongues, baby!

by SCOTT C

Awww, man! Whatever you're doing on Monday night, scrap it and reschedule 'cause you don't want to miss this one-night-only event. Monday, June 2, is the night that Montreal gets blessed with the Native Tongue Tour. You heard right. The Native Tongue Tour. When the doors open at 9 p.m., y'all are in for a treat when the legendary Jungle Brothers and Black Sheep hit the stage. Now, I don't know where this show came from but it's right on time. We were sitting around talking about Black Sheep just the other day, saying how much of a shame it was that they fell off. The JBs are most likely done with the whole U.K. big-beat explosion that we witnessed a couple years back, and now here both groups come with some good ol' hip hop! So, we got Mike G and DJ Sammy B as well as Dres and Mista Lawnge doing their thing on a Monday night at la Sala Rossa and myself and DJ Andy Williams holding down the joints. Tickets are $15 and available at Off the Hook, Disquivel, Cheap Thrills, Oblique, CD Esoterik and Casa del Popolo. Don't front, 'cause it might be a while before you see a show like this again.

On the other end of things that you should really check out: the explosive hype around NYC's A.R.E. Weapons is really something that deserves to be explored live. You'll get your chance when this Rough Trade Records trio rocks out at la Sala Rossa on Thursday, June 5. Tix are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. The fact that this no-fuckery band has absolutely no hidden charm to speak of makes it imperative that you cop a ticket. You heard it here last.

How's your news? If getting it straight from the horse's mouth doesn't sound so savoury anymore, check out Alena MTL (5662 Sherbrooke W.) on Friday, May 30. That's where the Guerilla News Network will be screening a handful of underground short films including Cop Watch, Crack the CIA and Eminem's "White America" video. These guys are on some other shit, exposing people to global issues you'd never see on CFCF or CNN. The flicks start at 6:30 p.m. and go till 9 p.m., with art by Dyske, so be there and find out the truth about Soylent Green.

This week marks the beginning of two nights at Dancing Mocha Jo at 5175A Parc, with Old to the New digging into hip hop and funk styles every Thursday night. DJs the Pigeon, Grapejuice and 2% hold it down, Mile-End style. Also, I'll be playing records with my man DJ Kobal every second weekend starting Saturday, May 31, as the Leftfoot Sessions commence for the summer. Should be nice, with Latin, Brazilian, Afro-beat, funk and soul the main focus of the dancefloor. It's Kobal's 30th birthday this Saturday too, so if he's ever made you dance, make sure you stop on by.

When in doubt, bite, lick and smooth it out… fathead@videotron.ca
