Dude raunch

>> Electro duo Runner and the Jet rise above

by LORRAINE CARPENTER

Everything about afterhours culture is evolving fast, from the venues to the legality to lingo to the sound. DJs now spin house alongside live bands playing electro, bands such as local duo Runner and the Jet, aka Julien Trumel and Anthony Raimondo. Trumel has dabbled in everything from punk to house to the Urbanauts' "techno-oriented rock hop," while Raimondo moved from metal to industrial to electronica. After their debut gig at Arrival 6, opening for the Sneaker Pimps and several rave-scale appearances, they're set to play their biggest show yet, 514's annual Swirl. This year's theme is Rise, an elaborate "adult circus" promising to stimulate all five senses on four floors of the Forum. The Mirror and Raimondo discussed how two guys, a keyboard and a guitar fit into it all.

Mirror: It seems you guys have really been around the block musically - where's the common ground?

Anthony Raimondo: The one thing that bonds the two of us, that we never found in our other projects, is new wave. Other than that, he'll push it one way and I'll push it the other way, from deep house to electro spoken word à la Ann Clark. I see the project as something that's going to evolve so we're still shopping for a label that will allow us to do that. There's big decisions to be made in the Runner and the Jet house, but everything's happening pretty fast for us. Good times.

M: What about your live show?

AR: I think our kick is to bring an opposing spectrum to wherever we're playing. If it's a rave atmosphere, we'll try to be more raunchy, if it's a raunchy place, we'll try to be really clean cut, just to get the tribes together, you know? I grew up idolizing CBGB's, the Manchester scene and crazy loft parties.

With Philgood, DJ Quest, Pink Feria, DJ Czech and more at Swirl at the Pepsi Forum on Sunday, May 18, 10pm, $50
