Rack 'em up

by SCOTT C

Damn! What a weekend. Those of you who managed to make it out to the Goods last Saturday night were beat about the head and face with the dirty funk stick, the illest that Montreal has heard to date. The lovely and talented Scotsman Keb Darge lived up to all the hoopla, despite a few microphone problems, and blessed us with the good shit. Nice to see that even the people who were at the Antibalas show made it up to dance - including the Antibalas boys themselves! I didn't see the legendary Ricky D up in there, although he was supposed to come through. He's been whispering in my ear about the prospect of finally getting ?uestlove from the Roots up here to DJ. I'm just getting tired of the idea popping up every few months. Let's do it! I know that MTL could definitely support the big man, right? I thought so…

Waiting patiently to get my hands on some music from local MC J Seven, who just swept the Hip Hop Forever anglo MC battles. You may have heard him on K103 over the last couple weeks, and apparently, he's busy working on an album right now. Keep your ears open. In other news, it looks like Jurassic 5 have nailed down a Montreal date, with a big show at Metropolis on April 22. The boys from Jurassic haven't seen downtown in a little while, so I'm assuming they'll be rolling hard. Hopefully they'll be touring with Cut Chemist and NuMark rocking the set lovely, 'cause otherwise, I'ma get angry…

Sundays at Blizzarts get a kick in the ass this week when La Jazztek welcomes the divine vinyl stylings of DJ A Man Called Warwick. No stranger to Montreal, AMCW brings his little bag of African, Brazilian and outer-worldy specialties back to town for this exclusive Sunday night session. If you even remotely like to dance, then you should probably be there, no? Here's the gravy: it's free!

What the hell!? I was flipping through the quintessential toilet bowl read the other day (Vice) and realized that little Mike Skinner aka the Streets is on tour in North America. Easily one of the best records of last year, Skinner's Original Pirate Material is on some Birmingham business. What I couldn't believe was that this geeza is not slated to come to Montreal. We must really smell. I can understand him not going to Toronto, but c'mon, man! Geezas need excitement! Anybody reading this who can make that show happen better get to work right now. If you're peeved like me, go to www.vice-recordings.com and drop them a line about leaving us out of the loop once again. Original pirate material, lock down your aerial.

While I'm ranting, I might as well add that Montreal is long overdue for the return of Roots Manuva as well. Big Rodney Smith gets love in this city, and can we have that right away, please? With a side order of the Poets of Rhythm? I'm about ready for another good ol' fashioned Montreal Ninja Tune blowout, so keep me posted.
