Plan B and Lee

by SCOTT C

Vinyl magazine mogul Jesse Walker celebrates his birthday this week with another blowout of the same massive proportions that we’ve come to expect from the big guy with the camera. Next Saturday, March 15, you can head down tho the Shatner Ballroom at McGill (3480 McTavish) for De Big Fête. With a list of DJs longer than my leg, look for names like Dr. Jay, Who-Z, Blaster, Peaches and Moonshine for starters. Here’s to another year, Jesse!

Mild-mannered DJ and diligent artist/businessman Miles Moore is starting a new night down at Quartier Latin. Plan B jumps off Thursday nights and won’t cost you a cent to walk through the gates. Expect house and such of the soulful kind, and look for guests like Don-Ray, James Gunn and Mighty Kat in the near future. Moore, who also has a hand in local imprint Gotsoul Records, has his own 12" coming out very soon, so be on the lookout.

Spoke to Dap King and Sugarman 3 headman Neal Sugarman the other day while he was getting ready to leave NYC for a short tour with funky soul sensation Lee Fields. They’ll be in town on Friday, March 21, for a show at la Sala Rossa that I know is bound to be hot. Neal has been here before both with his own outfit and the fabulous Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, but Lee Fields is on some other shit. Think of James Brown circa 1969 and you’re gettin’ warm. The tax is only $8 and that’s a steal for the show you’ll get. See you there.

Whoops! Looks like that NCRA comp that I reviewed last week (Dig Your Roots) bungled on one of their inclusions. The track listed as les Architeks’ "Le Diable Joue un Jeu" is in fact not our boys at all. No idea who the guys are, but if you already have les Architeks’ LP, then you know that’s not them. Shame! Better luck next time…

The holy trinity of Sixtoo, Simahlak and P-love have taken up residence at Blizzarts on Tuesday nights with their new night, School. No more teachers, no more books, nuthin’ but Simahlak’s dirty looks! Ha! Listen for hip hop, funk, prog (!), downtempo, indie and dub if you’re looking for an early weeknight fix. :

Seven just ’cause it feels good:
1. Sixtoo "Outremont Mainline Runs Across the Sunset" (Vertical Form)
2. Pavel Kostiuk "HMS Pinafore" (CDR)
3. Mountain Bros. "Yes Yes" (Babygrande)
4. Ahmad Miller "Windy C" (Stones Throw)
5. Little Brother "So Fabulous" (ABB)
6. Ebo Taylor "Heaven" (Soundway)
7. Yellowtail "Moa" (Compost)

Nothing a good shag wouldn’t fix… incubator@hiphopsite.com
