Sounds abound |

by RAF KATIGBAK Since this week’s got more events than Michael Jackson’s had nose jobs (which is to say, more than two), I’m going to dispense with the witty banter and move straight into the heart of the matter. Tonight, drop by Petit Campus and check out one of my favourite Montreal synth-pop bands, Echo Kitty, as they open up for Vancouver’s the Organ. Led by the multi-faceted Xavier Paradis, this trio is something like Giorgio Moroder and Depeche Mode doing rails at a high-energy French go-go party - a show not to be missed. Cover is a measly $6.50. Also tonight, drop by everyone’s favourite techno night/onomatopoeia Bong! at Amnesia (1421 Bishop) as resident DJ Sarcastic welcomes Halifax’s Danny Newton. Also on the bill are Freebass and Nter. Cover is $4. On the twisted hip hop tip, Montreal experimental producer Ghislain Poirier has teamed up with MC Seba and will be performing as Nonobstant this Friday, March 7. Special guests include Loco Locass and Mathieu St. Arnaud, who’ll be rocking the visuals. The whole shebang will be going down at l’American Can (2030 Pie-IX) and best of all, it’s free! Eddy Lewis will be taking over for Christian Pronovost (who’s off gallivanting in Europe with Dimitri From Paris) this Saturday at Exit’s Go Deep! night. You know the flavour: house, deep and classic. This Saturday, Rad’a Gallery (841 Gilford) continues its mandate of quality left-field performances as they present an evening of organic (i.e. Sam Shalabi and Aiden Baker) meets micro music (naw and I8U). A great opportunity to catch an adventurous, cutting-edge soundclash in a great space. $5 at the door. Also Saturday, get ready for another installment of the Blend as residents D-Joos, Galaksy, Jah-Style, Sabi Non-Stop and the Unexpected welcome special breaky guests Bliss and Jada. Call 401-6774 for deets. Soulmeka Saturdays at Salon Daome (141 Mont-Royal E.) will be celebrating International Women’s Day with performances by various female artists including DJ Bougie Soliterre. Free for the ladies and free Triple Five Soul T-shirts (first come, first serve so get there early!). Also on the IWD tip, this Saturday catch innovative females [sic], Alexis O’Hara and Rennan as they perform as part of the Espaces_Emergents festival (a month-long initiative of performances, indie cinema and workshops encouraging cultural development in Montreal’s East End). At le Zest (4200 Ontario E.), $6. Finally, Blue Dog’s popular Broken Wednesdays will be moving to Saphir starting March 12. Expect the same quality breaks but with a larger capacity (and a terrasse in the summer!). The Broken Crew will be starting things off with a bang at their new digs as they welcome Vancouver bad boy DJ Czech on opening night - remember to turn your "booty wiggle" knob up to eleven! : All those who believe in telekinesis, raise my hand… Diskoakimbo@sympatico.ca |
