Drum & bass destiny |
|
by RAF KATIGBAK First off, a shout out to my boys Drew and Blake from local drum & bass outfit dB, who both had birthdays last week. Drew and Blake met in Montreal about three years ago and one day found out that they were born exactly one day apart in the same hospital, 2,394 kilometres away in Winnipeg. Even stranger, they also realized that the other had in their possession a matching half-medallion that glowed with the letters "dB" when fit together. That very moment, they realized their destiny - to form a drum & bass duo called dB and take over Montreal. (Okay, so maybe most of that was bullshit, but they are about to drop a sick new album on 2top Records and seriously fuck shit up). You can catch these two in improv action amongst a plethora of local talent (including Sarah Neufeld, Matthew Lederman, Marcus Paquin and Chris Leroux) at O Patro Vys this Saturday, Feb. 8, 9:30 p.m., for the second installment of Moondata Productions’ Live Ambience and Beats Winter Series. Founded in 1995, Studio XX is Montreal’s foremost women’s digital resource centre. This week, amongst the various workshops, conferences and free exhibits, their sixth annual Maid in Cyberspace festival (no, it’s not the futuristic sequel to that recent J-Lo rom-com) will also be presenting some great musical acts. Tonight, Feb. 6, catch an experimental improv with Haeyoung Kim, Magali Babin and I8U at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, make sure you check out their New Electronic Music night featuring Anna Friz & Annabelle Chovstek, Myléna Bergeron and the squirrelgirl herself, experimental music vixen [sic]. Saturday, don’t miss the big blowout bash with everyone’s fave fraülein Lederhosen Lucil from 3 to 4 p.m. and Lesbians on Ecstasy, Nanobot Auxilliary Ballet and Alice and the Serial Numbers, starting at 9 p.m. This is all going down at the Fondation Jean-Pierre Perrault, 2022 Sherbrooke E. (corner de Lorimier). Check www.studioxx.org for more info. In celebration of Black History Month, this weekend Soulmeka Saturdays at Salon Daomé will present a very personal tribute set by DJ Fred Everything. Expect an eclectic, deep and soulful mix featuring all of his inspirations, from Mr. Brown to Mr. Mayfield to Mr. Wonder and back again. Cover is only $5 at the door, so represent! Wednesday, Feb. 12, snuggle up early to the spicy sounds of the Tropical Valentine’s Party at Blue Dog’s Broken, featuring the tender turntable stylings of Sase One and the dreamy-eyed deck mastery of Jacob Asher (plus DJ Melon with an all Florida set!) Finally, if you haven’t already heard, in his bid to take over the entire universe, Montreal electro ambassador Tiga will be launching his latest K7! mix CD at Mile End Club tonight. Be sure to come out early, as the place will surely be packed. You know what time that is… sassy time! : Let them eat cake! Diskoakimbo@sympatico.ca |
