People, places, things

by RAF KATIGBAK

If you haven’t been to Blizzarts in a while, you should check out their new digs featuring a new, much-needed coat check and a row of sitting booths that are perfect for re-enacting scenes from Scarface. Saturday night’s Chemistry was bumpin’ last week and props go out to DJ Mini (who’ll also host Soundshaper at her Mafia Électronique weekly tonight at Blue Dog) and Jordan Dare for holding it down all night long (bonus points go to Dare for the Rapture-to-Technotronic mix!). Hosted by the “banding” bandit himself Murad, Chemistry is keeping the electro flame alive. Also, Murad’s wildly successful Velcro night at Tokyo may be shifting days from Wednesday to Thursday sometime in February. More on that to come…

Wednesday night’s Flexout at Saphir is still one of the only places to catch some serious next-level sounds around town, and this week’s no exception. Wednesday, Jan. 29, Flexout welcomes Montreal musical maverick David Kristian for a live set as he celebrates yet another solid release on Wikkid Records, alongside RamDac, Recordface and Black Market. This is a great chance to catch Montreal’s IDM pioneer in a free and easy atmosphere. Only three measly dollars at the door (check www.flexout.com)!

Hot on the heels of last month’s smashing success, the giants down at Musique Risquée are at it again with another Soirée Risquée. This time we have Vincent Lemieux and Stephen Beaupre (not Baupre as per the flyer) bringing on the funky, minimal tech-house beats. Also that night, be sure to catch the debut of their loop-based live project Brandy Snifter. That’s at O Patro Vys on Friday, Jan. 24, 10 p.m., $5.

For something a little out of the ordinary, drop by SAT this Saturday, Jan. 25, for Concours de circonstances, a “techno happening rife with contagious mini-events and subversively uncontrolled installations” featuring live musical performances by Dance Against the Machine (Alain Thibault), Synthesthesia, Egg, Bassologie (J.F. Lemieux on bass + Luc Raymond-DJ), Persuasion (Masle/Kilburn) and DJ G O’Brien. The lounge area features Éloi Brunelle, Mossa and Olivié on the decks, and par b.l.eux, les Passagers, M. Edgar and HEIN? will represent on the visual tip. Tix are 10 in advance and 15 at the door.

After a year of elec-tropica and rare grooves, DJ Miles Moore (formerly DJ Element) will be shifting his Thursday happy hour (Après-Ski) gig at the Pub Quartier Latin to the evening (Ski de Soirée) shift where the flavour will change to deep house and dancefloor jazz (look out for another installment of Invisible Airlines soon, too!). He also recently landed a Saturday night residency at the new Belzya (ex-Jingxi) cabaret/nightclub spinning more deep house and Afro-Latin rhythms. :
