In these troubling times of financial uncertainty, every citizen must do his or her part to cut costs. That goes for prisoners, too, whether they like it or not. But how to shave costs from those who already have little more than metal bars and cots? The Virginia Corrections Department has the answer. No more of this cushy three meals a day business. Two is plenty. Three meals will be served up as usual on weekdays, but on weekends and holidays, all that’s going to change. “It’s going to save us money,” explained Corrections Department spokesman Larry Traylor, who expects the program to cut expenses by $3,100 (U.S.) a day. Under the plan, breakfast and lunch will be cancelled, replaced with a mid-morning brunch instead. “That way, they can sleep in,” commented Traylor. Hungry cons will be able to buy snacks at the prison commissary, or perhaps steal food from the weaker inmates. : » Scott Saxon |
