Back in the saddle again |
|
by RAF KATIGBAK It seems that 2003 is off to a good start as, this week, DJs big and small will provide many a chance for tomfoolery and monkey business. So strap on yer dancing shoes ’cause we gonna get down like James Brown (without all that nasty wife-beating stuff)! Les Venderdis Dislexmix will be an evening of electronic music and ambiance starting up this Friday at the Ibsen Kafé (1141 Bélanger, corner de la Roche, metro Jean-Talon). Visuals and sounds will be provided by VJs Les Passagers and DJs Baya, Olivié and Éloi Brunelle, and will also feature a very rare live appearance by Center Records co-owner and electro-tech DJ extraordinaire, db. It promises to be worth the trek, so don’t miss it! Friday night is a busy one with two other interesting events for your perusal. Lemme break it down. At Stereo, check out the Ravemontreal.10 event featuring a live performance by Pheek and le Cirque Vaudou, and DJs Pink Feria, Creator, Wizz and Uppercut. At O Patro Vys, join local experimental label Oral as they host an evening in two parts. The first (8 p.m.) is a CD launch of the latest offering from Oral, Christof Migone’s South Winds. On hand will be Migone himself, with guests le Pétomane and Martin Tétreault. For the second part (11 p.m.), get ready to dance as local tech-house producer Orazio Fantini will be on hand to move some rumps along with DJ Endless (aka Tlon). Call 845-3855 for details. This Saturday, drop by Aria as my man Green Velvet descends upon Montreal. With a degree in chemical engineering, Curtis Jones (as he’s called by his mum) will certainly be ready to drop some funky tech science on the dancefloor. In the ’90s (as Cajmere) he was dropping some of the rawest, funkiest Chicago house bombs around, and as Green Velvet he’s created several club classics, including last year’s hit that had everyone from PLURed-out ravers to ’roid-raged muscle-men going into the HMV dance section asking for “that La La Land thing.” Don’t miss him! Finally, this Saturday, it’s a shout-out to the old school as the IDJ party series gets all ragga on your ass with Jump Up In Da Jungle. Mashin’ up de place proper that night you’ll find guests Sixteen Armed Jack, Miss Bliss and Totem along with IDJ resi’s D-Joos, Galaksy, Accomplice, Axionfigga and Jada spinning some old-school favrit’s. Check www.mtlidj.lack.ca for more info. DISKO AKIMBO TICKET GIVEAWAY! The first two e-mails that correctly tell me the name of DJ D-Joos’s mix CD will each win a ticket for Jump Up in Da Jungle (hint: check www.mtlidj.lack.ca)! So all you kids who complain that there’s not enough ragga jungle in Montreal, start clicking! : Dyslexics of the world… untie! Diskoakimbo@sympatico.ca |
