>> Patrick Batemen raise the bar for local hip hop

by SCOTT C

Let me say straight up, without a doubt, that the most exciting progression of skills that I have witnessed in the shifty world of underground hip hop in Montreal has got to rest with Patrick Batemen. Those of you who were at the Lootpack show last year at the SAT and had never seen these guys do their thing before were probably wondering where the hell they were from. Loe Pesci and Narcicyst met while holding down the weekly freestyle set at CKUT 90.3’s Off the Hook with Revolution, lacing the airwaves week after week with some other shit. Like the psychotic split personality that their name refers to, they each bring a different set of skills to the mic, rife with individual style and deliberate thought.

Their song “Aim at Building,” which appears on Under Pressure’s Up North Trip Volume 2, is easily the standout track amongst the numerous Canadian submissions collected there. Backed by the crafty ear of beat-man Apokalyptik, Loes and Narci continue to rock the competition with complex rhymes about politics and world issues, and more punchy one-line killers than a triad fortune cookie factory.

Check for them, because they don’t give a shit about you. They’re much too busy working hard on their next EP, making sure they’re saying something different, in a way you never would’ve expected. :
