Cool sounds to see

>> Our attractive and well-groomed music staff suggest some hot acts to catch this summer

by RUPERT BOTTENBERG, LORRAINE CARPENTER, SCOTT C, JOHNSON CUMMINS and RAF KATIGBAK

Kicking off July 11, the Nuits d’Afrique fest is no slouch either. They’ve got P18 (ex-Mano Negra electro-salsa action), Afro-beat scion Femi Kuti, a Malian double-header in Rokia Traoré and the Super Rail Band, and Zimbabwean hero Thomas Mapfumo all lined up. And hey, les Francofolies-even though Indochine cancelled (boo hoo), there’s still the brilliant Jérome Minière (check his latest, Petit cosmonaute) on August 31 and Yann Tiersen-who composed the stunning score to the hit film Amélie-on August 3. That same night, Montreal’s Stefie Shock joins Tricatel label head Bertrand Burgalat (right) for a soirée of refined pop cool.

Mod squads and robot rock

The mucho-anticipated return of NYC post-grrrl dance combo Le Tigre, moustache and all, is slated for Café Campus on August 26.

Gators and snakes, dragons and mastodons

The behemoth of all-ages shows, the Vans Warped Tour, makes another return visit on August 16 at Parc des Îles. The line-up this year includes Bad Religion, MXPX, Circle Jerks, the Damned, Alkaline Trio, No Use for a Name, the Planet Smashers, Simple Plan and much more but, for Chrissakes, remember to pack the sunblock this year.

In the “hats off to flute solos” section we have none other then Jethro Tull paying a visit to Place des Arts on August 21. Bob Dylan will mumble away at the Molson Centre on August 12.

Ether buzz and Evolution theory

The first release on Fabergé will be “You’re So Gangsta” by Montreal’s own spacefunk/indie rock duo Chromeo (aka P-Thugg and Dave 1) with a remix by current U.K. chartburner Playgroup. Expect a show featuring both of these acts in August. -Raf Katigbak
