Do the decade-dance

by RAF KATIGBAK

In this world of high-speed this and accelerated that, it was only a matter of time before the retro fad caught up with the speed of modern living. With the whole ’80s thing wearing a little thin, punters are looking to the next next (decade that is) for nostalgic party anthems and forgotten dancefloor-pumping tunes. Remember the ’90s? I hope so, it was only like, two years ago for chrissake! Well, the Concordia Fine Arts Student Society does, and they want you to remember too! This Friday you can join them (and the Roy Street Collective) for November Rain 1991 at 111 Roy St. E. From 10 p.m. to 3 a.m., there will be DJs (Static, Mr. Vain aka Corey K), live acts (like Robin Robin performing electro beats on the Gameboy), “Trippy glow-in-the-dark art installations,” early-’90s video games on giant screens, cheap booze and costume prizes (so dust off them parachute pants!). Tix are only a fiver at the door so don’t miss it!

Anyone dropping by the Grill at Blizzarts tonight is in for a special treat. Not only do they get to rump-shake to the funky sounds of residents DJ T’cha and Bliss, but they also have the opportunity to be immortalized forever on the upcoming Grill flyer. That’s right, tonight a camera will be shooting the crowd, capturing all the hot ’n’ sweaty hotties bumpin’ ’n’ grindin’ in an effort to show the masses what most of us already know, that the Grill is one of the hottest places to be on a Thursday night. So dress to impress, people, and make sure to practice those moves in front of a mirror before you head out (God forbid you get immortalized as “that dude with the Shawn Desman move”).

Already immortalized in the annals of dance music history, Tim Fielding (founder of the world’s first DJ mix series, the acclaimed Journeys by DJ label) will be spinning at Mile End Bar on Nov. 28. Expect a blend of soulful funk, jazzy vibes and deeper house flavours.

Saturday night, be sure to drop by Stereo for what will be the last Stereo Saturday for a while as they are closing down for renovations. In an effort to reassure worried punters throughout clubland, Angel Moraes has sent out an e-mail stating that he has “come to an agreement with the new partners” and that Stereo will reopen, better than ever, Dec. 21. This Saturday, dance your ass off to the sounds of David Morales and Moraes as they “plan to give it to you as long as you can take it.” So c’mon, party people, come out and show some support for Montreal’s world-class club!

For a chance to hear one of the funkiest up-and-comers in the local electro scene, drop by Blue Dog’s Broken night this Wednesday, Dec. 4, where RadarSat-1 will be performing live. Anyone into the old-school breaks or electro synth-pop sounds should support local talent and check this guy out (www.montrealelectro.com). Supa hot! :
